Ronaldinho

Would be surprised if anyone thought he isn’t the most entertaining footballer ever. He was a circus act, but a very productive one. The tricks weren’t just for show, they invariably led to goals/assists. That stepover that left Ashley Cole for dead before he passed to Rivaldo to score against England in the 2002 World Cup last 16 game was the beginning.

Got Sky in August 1996 precisely when they got the rights to Spanish football. The first year watching Ronaldo was unbelievable (second best player I’ve seen in my lifetime behind Messi). Entertainment wise thought that couldn’t be topped, then Ronaldinho arrives at Barca in summer 2003.

Saw his goal against Villarreal live. Probably the second best goal I’ve seen live after Rivaldo’s overhead bicycle kick for Barca vs Valencia in 2001. The execution is extraordinary.

My thoughts exactly. Messi and Ronaldo have the stats and are exceptional footballers. The best. But Ronaldinho had something extra. Hed probably beat them both with top ten moments. And I know Ronaldo and Messi have done countless special stuff.

The World Cup in 2002 - there was the excitement of watching Best every time the ball went to him, but he could do things, with a smile, that George would never have dreamed of.

And never a selfish player

Yes, Ronaldinho was one of the greats. I've always enjoyed watching him play. These days it's mainly on youtube, so it's a shame his clips are so low resolution...

Back in the day, I always used to get him to sign for Everton, when playing on Championship Manager. And we used to dominate, year after year! Happy Days!

What's not great is that he influenced too many idiots to try the 'fake glance/pass' technique. My weekly, Friday night, 5-a-side football was always ruined by an idiot that insisted on that fake glance, every other pass, even with a simple 5 yarder. He was so bad, but probably thought he was the best player there! Happily, the idiot is injured and out for a year. He is also a RS fan, just to make it better :-)
