Romelu Lukaku

Reckon his insistence on proving his doubters wrong has played a part on him seemingly being more interested in assists than goals so far?

He hasn't been. He's just been generally crap.

He was very good last game and he's had one other good game this season in the league, and one in Europe. Other than that, he's just been crap - only difference is earlier in the season he was poking in goals to disguise it.

He's no different at all to at Everton - 1 in 10 performances, high goalscoring record. Only difference is that his shortcomings are being exposed at a higher level, whereas the goal stat hid all sins at Everton and the 'experts' put it down to playing in a comparatively poor side.

No, as has been discussed at length by United fans in the thread posted earlier, the problem has been quality of service from the supporting forwards. Lukaku has had good assist stats throughout his career because he is a far better footballer than some posters in this thread would give him credit for. Their reasons are well known and entirely separate to what happens on the pitch, unfortunately.

The thread on redcafe was great confirmation of what the less biased posters on here have been saying, from fans who watch him game in, game out.

After the league cup defeat:
  • Tonight just demonstrates why we were 6th with Zlatan leading the line and 2nd with Rom... I watched Zlatan play exactly the same way last year. Too slow, too deep and ponderous. Lukaku stays up the pitch and forces the CBs back with his pace and discipline which most of your armchair pundits don’t recognise
  • Only positive in attack tonight was him. Did well and unlucky not to score.
  • Yeah, he was real threat when be came on, unlucky not to end up on the scoresheet.
  • Was great when he came on.
  • Did really well when he came on: difference between him and Ibra was quite scary.
  • Certainly looks better when you compare him versus Ibra!
  • His link up play is severely underrated on here. Its odd because his first touch at times can be woeful but when he has runners and the ball fed into him he can also pull off some lovely little one touch passes.
  • I agree. His link up play is rarely a big issue in our performances.
After the draw at Leicester:
  • Fantastic with his link up and 1 touch passes tonight, big feck you to the jokers who think he's Benteke MK II.
  • Exactly. His one touch passing and general passing is very good.
  • As g nev just said. Fantastic performance tonight from him and without a goal
  • He’s been fantastic
  • He is surrounded by crap at the moment. I really feel bad for him.
  • Let down by incompetent teammates.
  • I say it every game but the service to him is absolutely dreadful. Worked his bollocks off again for no reward, some of his passing and linkup play was majestic and he deserved at least an assist if not two. We absolutely have to get reinforcements into the attack to support him. It is a criminal waste of his ability and talent.
  • Feel sorry for the guy, would be banging in goals anywhere else. Works so fecking hard for everyone else, just a shame nobody works hard for him.
  • Really did his job well today, shame the ones around him weren't on his wavelength.
  • Some absolutely quality passes from him tonight. Shame he is surrounded by brain dead players though.
  • Even Ruud wont score that much if he played dross like we have
This then goes on for post after post.

Starting with ibra today. Needs some goals or he's gonna find himself behind ibra when he gets going and Jose parks the bus for the big games.

Are you suggesting that different football fans have different opinions?

First game in a while bar the City game he hasn't been decent in and wasn't that bad apparently.

More a case of the entire team being pretty awful.

I'm not sure whether all this is good or bad for us for the upcoming fixture.
