Roberto Martinez discussion

why would we not want our players in a condition where they can play?
extending contracts is cheaper and more reliable that getting a new player in (notice I didn't say better). Any player coming in is a gamble, with extensions you know what you're getting and can use the money elsewhere. Come on this is easy stuff.

Keeping them around squeezes out the young players trying to break in. Which is the whole point of my first post starting this discussion off.

Any minunte now I expect a Mod to jump on me for being off topic, so I will now stop.

Rm's decision to renew Hibbert now, in hindsight, looks a right waste of dosh.

In fact, renewing Hibbert at all at any time over the last ten years was a right waste of dosh.

In what way has Bobby squeezed out Stones, Galloway, Browning and Barkley by having other players in the squad? If nothing else it sets a standard that the younger ones have to aim for to get in the side.

Who is there being kept out of the side at the moment by an older player? Besic is the only one I can seriously come up with but he's been injured quite a bit and it's still questionable if he's better than Barry. Joel? nah, he's no better than Tim.

only because our only other option at Right Back has succeeded when called upon. There was no guarantee of that and we'd have slated Bobby for having no experienced cover.

So why is he and the club bending over backwards to getting Pienaar and Gibson fit and giving the others extended contracts. Her we go, McCarthy is he that good? difference of opinion on his thread.

I really rate Gibson and he's hardly old, whilst he's under contract why would we not try and get him fit? I don't rate McCarthy that much but it doesn't get away from the fact that he is a young player that Roberto trusts week in week out.

Every club has some players that fans consider need 'clearing out'. The economics of saving X amount of wages is not that simple.

Worth bearing in mind the likes of Ferguson, Mourinho, Rodgers and a fair few other top managers were never elite players before proving themselves.

Maybe in years to come we could add Hibbert to that list.

you class rodgers as a top manager? wow.

martinez was a great player i thought. he could have played at a higher level.

Just a little bit of fun to cheer TL up Jack.

Can't recall seeing Martinez as a player so I'll take your word for it mate.
he was surprisingly similar to Barry, which might explain a few things.
We already know that he thinks that all of a teams problems can be solved by Defensive Midfielder, I've always suspected this is because he used to be one.

Hibbert has proved that he can also cover at centre back in an emergency. Players like Hibbo, Osman are woth keeping available at least until the end of this season, and beyond that in coaching roles.

I had to chuckle at that.:D
