Palace are South London

We are not really rivals. Palace consider Chelsea repellent and Chelsea do not consider Palace at all.
It is a London derby but so is Brentford v Arsenal.

Historic rivals were Millwall as we regularly played each other for years and years in the old Div 3 South.
In the mid 70's Venables became our manager and Mullery managed them. They hated each other and it came to a head in an FA Cup 1st Round second replay at Stamford Bridge (which we won) thanks to iffy reffing. Mullery didn't enjoy the friendly joshing he got and threw his loose change into the Palace fans. Game on! (That was a very brief version.)

Here’s the thing that gets me, Dave.

This RS/United “rivalry” and where it comes from.

Let’s nail one thing for a start.....it ain’t about the cities.

Because if it was then RS/City and EFC/United would be “rivalry derbies” as well.

It ain’t about any great rivalry on the pitch.....they have never had great teams at the same time in my days of following football.

I can only think of twice when they were involved in the same title race.....United fell away toward the end of 1979 and the RS imploded after Rafael’s head exploded about a dozen years ago.

When was the last time a league game between these two had major consequences for both sides near the top of the table?

Not for a very long time.

Yes, I know they lie 2nd and 3rd at the moment but they are so far behind the leaders they are only playing for the Best Of The Rest Cup.

F.A. Cup Finals?

I can only think of two.....1977 and the Spice Boy Final circa 1996.

I know they played the League Cup Final in 1983 and I think they might have played one of those Cardiff finals.

But no great history of massive games between them.

Which only leaves one reason.....school kids in London, Dublin or Oslo in the 60s and 70s latching on to them and kicking lumps out of each other in t’ schoolyard then inventing a “rivalry” when they grew up and became opinion formers in football journalism

In case you haven’t noticed, we are discussing it in the “World Football” section.

That’s the section in which we discuss matters in the wider football world and not Everton.

We have a whole section dedicated to Everton threads where you will find we are plenty “bothered about ourselves”.

And none of them - not even the OF game - will be presented as something they're not.

Saints and Pompey....now there is proper hatred based on proper reasons.

Has it roots in scab labour being bussed in from one city to the other to break a strike.

I am not sure whether the Blacklegs came from Portsmouth to Southampton or vice versa.
