Rivalry weekend (real rivalry, not the Meeja inflated Malaysian Derby)

Currently being given the BS sales pitch of "Liverpool's righteous land of *fantastic football* versus Jose's evil empire of trophy winning".
Oh my god that was embarrassing on talksport earlier, wasn’t it. Trying to say that Liverpool overshadow United’s “not very good” recent trophies because they play nicer football.

The bit where they said finishing runners up twice was basically the same as winning twice was the icing on the cake for me.

When did it stop paying to be a winner :coffee:

It was laughable. The way they were trying to equate the gegenpresse stuff of Klopp with the classic United way of playing under Busby and Ferguson was cringeworthy. Never in a million years would Busby or Ferguson have played like that.

Tonight, Saturday and Sunday we have some snarling humdingers which mean the world to at least one, and usually both, competing teams and their supporters.

What's your preferences out of this lot?:

Friday

Edinburgh Derby - Hibs v Hearts

Saturday

Sarf Landan Derby - Chelsea v Palace

Sunday

Old Firm game - Rangers v Celtic
East Midlands Derby - Forest v Derby
Welsh/diet-Welsh Derby - Wrexham v Chester

Dave.....Chelsea ain’t Sarf Lahndan, me old china......they be west London innit.

Chelsea v Fulham....now there’s a game fit for “Rivalry weekend”

Anytime yellow card for John McGinn for Hibs please betting gods.
2/1, get me weekend off to a flier.

Here’s the thing that gets me, Dave.

This RS/United “rivalry” and where it comes from.

Let’s nail one thing for a start.....it ain’t about the cities.

Because if it was then RS/City and EFC/United would be “rivalry derbies” as well.

It ain’t about any great rivalry on the pitch.....they have never had great teams at the same time in my days of following football.

I can only think of twice when they were involved in the same title race.....United fell away toward the end of 1979 and the RS imploded after Rafael’s head exploded about a dozen years ago.

When was the last time a league game between these two had major consequences for both sides near the top of the table?

Not for a very long time.

Yes, I know they lie 2nd and 3rd at the moment but they are so far behind the leaders they are only playing for the Best Of The Rest Cup.

F.A. Cup Finals?

I can only think of two.....1977 and the Spice Boy Final circa 1996.

I know they played the League Cup Final in 1983 and I think they might have played one of those Cardiff finals.

But no great history of massive games between them.

Which only leaves one reason.....school kids in London, Dublin or Oslo in the 60s and 70s latching on to them and kicking lumps out of each other in t’ schoolyard then inventing a “rivalry” when they grew up and became opinion formers in football journalism :pint2:

Rivalry?

It is the Two Bald Men Fighting Over A Comb derby.

Quite. Liverpool/media/kopites invent rivalries based on the circumstance at that moment in time. Keeps them relevant, in their eyes.

Your point about them never actually been rivals in the league, is well made. In fact, cup matches have been more important. Like you say, a few finals, and iirc, a United last minute winner at OT after Liverpool had been 2 up.

In my lifetime, I recall them having real league battles for the title with us, Forest, QPR, (look it up kids), Arsenal, Leeds, Ipswich, obvs some I have forgotten.

But I dont recall them and United being that involved in a spat, other than as you said, when Rafael went nuts.

Don't really give a toss....its not Everton....would like Dowell to at least score for Forest. Derbies are for clubs from the same city...everything else is manufactured

60s and 70s for United in Ireland maybe; 80s and 90s for Liverpool there I'd have thought.
