For football supporters? Yes, defo.

His name is synonymous with goal scoring.

In Britain, he's like Fred Perry in Tennis...Roger Bannister in athletics....WG Grace in cricket...

I agree with this type of reference. His records speak for themselves and his place in the sport's history is assured as well as here of course. But the sport was so different then you cant make sensible comparisons with today's greats.

This theory its forgotten it was the same conditions for every player....... In his era he broke records that will never ever be caught up on since - his England career.... in his 60 goal season did you know he missed league games to play for his country? also his scoring feats on the world stage were just as incredible......

Joey I'm not doubting he was utterly brilliant and clearly the very best of his era. Like a WG Grace for cricket as @davek says above. I'm just saying you cant compare him to a modern striker (good or bad) as the game is so different.

Most Prem players earn more per week than Bill Dean did in his entire career

I agree but any footballing era is defined that way in my eyes..

Yes Joey. We agree!

Nobody has a clue what would happen if you threw a Messi or Ronaldo into a wet Division 1 match on a potato field of a pitch in Blackburn or Preston in the 1930s. They'd probably be snapped in two the first time a defender actually got close to them and that would be it.

Likewise Dixie in the modern era would be blown up for fouling most of the time and probably be lacking for pace.

Different rules - different games.

Yes but at that time era streams for every team ....Dixie was a pure athlete and a boyhood blue....'

Read his autobiographies he was a complete athlete in his era....

I’ve posted this story before but it’s a good un so no apologies for posting again on this thread
My Dad and I got to Wembley early in 66 as he had only got me a ticket the day before and we were in different pens so had to swap one of them as I was only 8.
We got to the start of Wembley Way about midday and my Dad spotted Dixie. We went over to ask for an autograph but he was just about to be interviewed by some newspaper reporters. He said to us to follow him up Wembley Way whilst he gave the interviews so he could speak to us after he had finished. We did so and by the time we had reached Wembley Dixie had finished the interviews.
He then gave us time to talk to him and sign my autograph book. He also got one of the reporters to take a picture of me and him(unfortunately I never saw where the picture might have been printed)
What a real gentleman he was.

The same rules for ever player and teams and players in Dixie's era ..

Jesus Joey it's like a Brexit debate again :hayee:

But I am agreeing with you !

Within his era Dixie was a legend. Within his era he stood head and shoulders above any other player (as far as I'm aware).

But you cant compare his era to today's era. It may as well be a different sport.
