Riots in Ukraine

The EU will hold an 'emergency meeting' on the situation in the Ukraine...on Thursday.

Ha Ha. In your own time lads.

It must have sounded like a great idea getting involved in the Ukraine...now they're bricking it.

Never mess with the Russians, they ALWAYS play the long game.
Sorry that 28 countries leaders probably have things to do as well mate.

I'm sure you'll swerve this and just blame the nazis again. :)

Be specific. What's idiotic about it? If you accept Kennedy was justified, you also accept Putin is.

Russia shipped warheads to Cuba. Kennedy's actions may not have been appropriate, but he was legitimately provoked.

The Ukrainian situation does not have many parallels. Russia held up a [redacted] government in Ukraine, bribing its leaders to take action that a significant portion of Ukrainians did not like. These people protested, etc., etc., and now Russia has taken action against the sovereignty of Ukraine. Unless you count the Cold War (and if so, let's go back 70 or so years...), the US has taken very small "action" in Ukraine, certainly small compared to sending in "stabilization" forces.

Show me where the similarities begin and we can have a conversation.

Completely different situation. Kennedy reacted to a genuine military threat from a world power; Russia are bullying a lesser nation and annexing illegally.

A better comparison point would be Nazi Germany with the Sudetanland or Alsace-Lorraine. It's an illegal annex of land with no valid justification of self defence.

check mate to Vlad

He might well have checkmated himself - they seize Crimea and the chances are he will wake up and find the border of the EU (and by extension NATO) has moved a thousand miles closer to Moscow overnight. What will he do when the standard of living in Ukraine sees a similar improvement to the rest of the former Eastern Bloc?

To put it another way, what he is about to do is to go half way to giving Europe what Hitler wanted in 1941.

The Ukrainian situation does not have many parallels. Russia held up a puppet government in Ukraine, bribing its leaders to take action that a significant portion of Ukrainians did not like. What do you mean a 'puppet government'. Were they not elected democratically?

I tell you what, they were/are more legitimate than the puppet government that existed in Cuba before the mafia were cleared out.

The Kennedy administration took action because the Cubans were to have US range ballistic missiles. Understandable move by the US to face that down (though as history has shown the Russian long game there was to have Turkish US bases shelved). Now we have an EU/US inspired revolt using Ukrainian nazi groups in the front line to usurp a friendly regime and threaten the Russian Federation by extending NATO onto its doorstep and possibly seize their Black Sea fleet's home port.

But you think that's idiotic and nothing like a historical parallel.

Ok.

NATO is a spent force, The EU is too economically fragile to really put the squeeze on Russia. If the Western powers try and ramp up the economic heat on Russia - all Russia would have to do is threaten to flood the markets with it's gold reserves (they have some $800bn worth of gold reserves). Global markets would crash - Obama and the US would [Poor language removed] themselves.

The IMF classes Russia as the second largest economy for pure purchasing power in the world - It has the power to do serious economic damage to those that threaten it with harm.
