Played with both spanish and (brazilian) portuguese speakers and they could understand each other but they said it was like hearing someone speaking broken english with a strange accent.

Spanish and portuguese is practically the same language with different pronunciation... for example a Brazilian and an Argentinian can have a conversation talking in their respective languages and they would understand each other perfectly (In fact, in the Copa Libertadores, journalists interview the players and each one speaks their own language)
