Transfer Rumour Reinier Jesus

Why is Brazilian TV comparing one of their teams to ours?
That's a very good question. Apart from comparing a team with Reinier in it against one that might have him in it- who knows? I don't speak Portuguese so have no idea what they were saying to answer that question.

Well they wouldn't be doing it if we were established top six. The underlying message is that Everton are not good enough for Reinier, only they're too polite to frame it in those terms.

I suppose its a sign of progress of a sort that the "who do Everton think they are?" narrative now has an international element, rather than being confined to the likes of Watford, West Ham, and Wolves.

A large proportion of the Celtic fans comment pieces when we were linked to Kieran Tierney last year were of this ilk, that he was "too good" for Everton and as such selling him to us would represent a huge waste of talent. There didn't seem to be that slant in the run-up to his move to Arsenal, and therein lies the difference in perception.

The completely logical idea that a club in our position shouldn't be content to accept the status quo, and should want to improve and show ambition by signing better players than what they already have seems entirely lost when dealing with fans with a chip on their shoulder, wherever they may be.

I guess all I was really looking for is does this confirm we’re after Reiner.

This makes a big difference too. It's why perhaps Zaha and Doucoure don't kick up an enormous fuss to get out of their respective clubs in the summer. You add them 2 to what we currently have and I really think we are in with a chance of getting to the top 4.

Our first objective has to be to put distance between ourselves and the others outside the top 6. To make it seem to those players clubs and fans that Everton is a big step up. We are getting there but it's taking time.

I have to say though, to a greater or lesser degree we only have ourselves to blame. The appointment of Sam Allardyce had ramifications. Not only because of what it symbolised, but for 6 months the media were continually told he was a miracle worker to get a club like Everton to 48 points. You can't go from that, to just over a year later being surprised when clubs seem reticent to countenance the idea you are a step up.

To be fair that is a low point in our recent history appointing Big Sam. That came at the end of a few years of constant change in management and mismanagement of spending. Before that we were a comfortably better side than most of those we are looking to break away from, and now our ambition/potential is lightyears ahead of them too. I dont think the actual clubs/players think we arent a big step up.. I think they are just appeasing their fans by refusing to sell.

I dont think that really applies to the young players being targeted. Kean didnt seem to mind and i think Reinier would feel quite comfortable knowing the manager speaks the same language and of course Richarlison and Bernard are here.

Our squad is becoming younger now and we should be looking for players like Reinier who can gradually replace the older lads like Sigurdsson.

The money we didnt spend on Doucoure and Zaha should really be used on those (like iwobi) of 23 and younger who wont even look at the past before Brands/Silva and be eager to link up with our new young team.

No I agree in general. I think there are specific moments, where a particular player can really help you move forward. I don't think either of us are Sigurdssons biggest fans, but he has been pretty consistent in what he's delivered. I can see why the manager sees a positive in having players for the here and now. You get that same sense from Delph, he arrives and day 1 he's at the level thats needed.

If you look at Liverpool, they have made a history of buying the best of sides outside the top 6 and got into thew top 4 using that method. Of the two above I'd personally prefer Doucoure and think we could probably get him for under 40 million if Watford continue to struggle under a new manager. Flores will want his own players and he will likely need to sell to have funds to do so. I think the lad is an absolute monster and will dominate midfields for us.

Would have loved Doucoure.

Gbamin is a big bloke and so is Gomes but we need alternatives in there who can play DM/CM.

Id have gone for Sangare and Doucoure if we were throwing ridiculous money at Zaha.

I suspect that we were not a million miles away from Zaha or Doucoure. I am sure both would have come as well if we'd have played the negotiations game better/ earlier/ took a slightly bigger financial hit with their current clubs. It's frustrating that we are so close at times and don't grasp the chance... such is life. Zaha in Everton would have added an extra dimension to our attack (probably at the expense of my beloved Bernard, sob) and would frighten quite a few defences. Doucoure would have strengthened our midfield up considerably with Gana going and Gblammo out. Definitely entering top 6 territory, and from there it's just a couple of results to the good for us and a couple to the bad for a few others and you're in 4th.

Such is life. I would however be more than delighted if the likes of Reinier represented the current recruitment policy of Everton- young talented players who are keen to make a name for themselves, who can either be moved on at profit or kept a hold of to push us on.

Big Sam though... Uggggh.

I’m surprised you’ve not pumped yourself into the next dimension mate!! lollol

This has to be the model - akin to Athletico Madrid. Look where this got them - they closed the gap on the top 2 and actually won the league recently. Their scouting network allowed them to consistently replace their players who were sold for big profits, particularly their strikers. They are now in a position buy the likes for Felix for £100m!
