Reality and aspiration

The sad reality is, fans can have all the aspiration in the world, but if there's none among the people running the club, we're never going to progress.

"We're Man United, we'll do what we want."

You'll maybe say it's just tongue in cheek, but mancunians aren't exactly renowned for being self-effacing, and I suspect many Man Utd fans' take on it is more literal than that.

Remember reading an article a few years back that said, from a potential investor's point of view, Villa are a more attractive proposition than us for a few reasons, including their status as the 'main' club in their city and their geographical location meaning they have a much wider catchment area in terms of UK fanbase. Not sure I'm convinced, but that's what it said.

What a strange thing to say, I bet you think all scousers are funny and will invite you in and do you a brew if you knock on the door as a complete stranger.

No only that but none of us are Mancunian anyway, all Mancs are City fans as you can see by the bulging Ethiad today.

How do the fans of other big clubs display their arrogance? Feel free to use United as an example, I'm always being told we're arrogant and I genuinely don't understand what it means when used as a blanket term for a set of fans.

You have given yourselves labels such as 'the peoples club' is that not arrogant? I'm a person and you're not my club.

Seems to me that it's just another lazy, throwaway term that has no basis whatsoever in reality. If you're liked and I'm not certain you're as popular as you think it's because you're not a threat.

Now hang on before you get angry at that last statement, I'm not being derisory here, I'm thinking specifically about how Ferguson 'warmed' towards Wenger once Arsenal were no longer a threat in the league, as soon as you get a title challenging team again whenever that may be you won't be liked anymore. It's all bull**** mate.

As an outsider it's difficult to see how Everton progress back to the top under your current regime, it's going to take a genius manager or a loaded owner. You must be next on the list I would have thought for a rich buyer, well you or Villa.

Excellent post........

Why's it strange? It's hardly the most inaccurate statement in the world. It's not necessarily a criticism either - more an observation.

You accept the "We'll do what we want" chant could reasonably be construed as arrogant, though?

It's the branding of a million people with a particular character trait, I do find that kind of stuff strange and nearly always inaccurate, certainly not offensive though.

You can construe it as arrogant if you like mate, it's a chant that's well past it's sell by date that's for sure, more of a wind up I'd say but not something I can really raise any enthusiasm to argue about.

No, it's a Munich chant used by those lovable rogues across the park from you. He might not have meant that, I was just enquiring.

No one, and I mean no one, on here would mention the tragic event of Munich as a way of having a go.....that is pure Kopite behaviour which disgusts us.......

Fair enough, wouldn't disagree.

That's the core of the issue. Too many of our fans are happy with what we've got. The ambition has gone, replaced with 'realism.'

Got to disagree - we all want a new owner/board with a footballing vision and a decent amount of folding stuff to make us competitive, and at the same time some of us are realistic. In the current climate and with the way others are spending we are totally hamstrung. Being realistic doesn't mean people have settled for something less than they aspire to - shame that some think that's the case.
