Reality and aspiration

I read somewhere recently that Evertonians were more liked than most fans of 'big' clubs because we've had the arrogance knocked out of us after 25 years of under-achievement. I think that's probably true - but it's not exactly conducive to pushing us on by expecting more. Let's get a bit more arrogant.

How do the fans of other big clubs display their arrogance? Feel free to use United as an example, I'm always being told we're arrogant and I genuinely don't understand what it means when used as a blanket term for a set of fans.

You have given yourselves labels such as 'the peoples club' is that not arrogant? I'm a person and you're not my club.

Seems to me that it's just another lazy, throwaway term that has no basis whatsoever in reality. If you're liked and I'm not certain you're as popular as you think it's because you're not a threat.

Now hang on before you get angry at that last statement, I'm not being derisory here, I'm thinking specifically about how Ferguson 'warmed' towards Wenger once Arsenal were no longer a threat in the league, as soon as you get a title challenging team again whenever that may be you won't be liked anymore. It's all bull**** mate.

As an outsider it's difficult to see how Everton progress back to the top under your current regime, it's going to take a genius manager or a loaded owner. You must be next on the list I would have thought for a rich buyer, well you or Villa.

It was Moyes who coined that in one of his first press conferences, based on the club's level of support in Liverpool. Fans and marketing liked it, so it stuck.

I never knew that to be honest, thought it was a longer term thing than Moyes. So not only have we employed an excellent football manager we've got ourselves a marketing genius too? No wonder the Glazers went for him.

Just be sure to run a mile if you hear the words "gun to a knife fight" or "plucky little united"

In 2003 we just needed a competent board and would have landed a stadium better than an oligarch could have dreamt up. We'd now have had 10 years benefit from the income and status the Kings Dock would have given us and would be well set.

Bravo Bill
That was the one.
We will never recover from that missed opportunity. Never.

I'm not really sure what you're taking issue with. I'm not saying arrogance is a bad thing - quite the opposite.

Arrogance is the expectation of success. Lots of people that are arrogant are justifiably so. Some, like many Liverpool fans, are not. That's why they are derided more than Evertonians by your average Premier League fan.

Evertonians have next to no arrogance left - and I don't think that does us any favours. It also flattens aspirations. We should be expecting more of our club. We shouldn't be happy with the status quo.

If you're liked and I'm not certain you're as popular as you think it's because you're not a threat.

I didn't say I thought we were popular. I told you what I read. I have no desire for us to be the most liked team in the Premier League - because, as you say, that implies we carry no threat.

I want us to win trophies and be despised for that. We aren't going to do that under our current stewardship, or with a fanbase that accepts where we're at.

Fair enough, I would disagree that expectation and arrogance are the same thing but if that's your interpretation of it then who am I to argue?

Arrogance is just a term tends to get thrown at teams that win things usually, sometimes like in the ****es example its unfounded arrogance - usually stoked on by buffon like statements from the media who have failed to realize they arent capable of challenging for anything anymore

The sad reality is, fans can have all the aspiration in the world, but if there's none among the people running the club, we're never going to progress.

How do the fans of other big clubs display their arrogance? Feel free to use United as an example,

"We're Man United, we'll do what we want."

You'll maybe say it's just tongue in cheek, but mancunians aren't exactly renowned for being self-effacing, and I suspect many Man Utd fans' take on it is more literal than that.

You must be next on the list I would have thought for a rich buyer, well you or Villa.

Remember reading an article a few years back that said, from a potential investor's point of view, Villa are a more attractive proposition than us for a few reasons, including their status as the 'main' club in their city and their geographical location meaning they have a much wider catchment area in terms of UK fanbase. Not sure I'm convinced, but that's what it said.
