To illustrate this mate, a very personal story of two cases I came across whilst working for them, one was a girl - about 19-20 who in her home country in Africa had been kidnapped and raped, tortured over a period of 3-4 weeks by a high ranking military officer. Her case was actually refused based upon lack of provable evidence, the girl didn't even hsve a single piece of documentation as she fled - even though everything she said was blatantly true given the absolute detail she recalled - which you couldn't fabricate.
Meanwhile the officer named was also applying for political asylum - there's been a coup and he claimed he would be persecuted and killed if he returned, he had all correct documentation and sailed through the asylum procedure, in large part due to a certain letter of recommendation by a Brit working for the foreign office who's been stationed in the country saying he had been a trusted friend of the UK foreign office.
The system at that point killed my soul as realised just how broken it had become
