Well lets see what we get in first, then we can judge whether or not he will be missed. We still have 2 weeks to replace him and according to Moyes there is money to spend.

Of course he's the last of a dying breed which is why it was very important that we replaced him. We need someone with natural athletisism who could get around the park and offer something more than just defensive skills. Lee had his strengths but he also had alot of weaknesses that limited our game.

The fact that he could only play in one formation was another reason why he needed to be replaced, we need to be adaptable and our midfielder need to be able to play in 2/3 formations.

If Moyes gets the right man in we'll fine, hopefully he does. If he doesn't then I do agree Carsley will be a big miss.

That post sums it up perfectly for me. Think it's by far the most important signing to be made. Hopefully his successor will have the same defensive qualities, coupled with vision, passing and athletisism.

That formation is our best formation though TB, 1 our players excel at

I agree but we need to be adaptable. Some games will suit 4-4-2 and some games will suit 4-5-1. If we sort out the centre of midfield we may well revert to 4-4-2 as we'll have the players capable of playing that formation.

Look at Man utd, they can play a variety of formations, 4-4-2, 4-4-1-1, 4-3-3 and 4-5-1. That is what I want from us, players who can adapt to different games.

And lets be honest, Cahill is rarely fit so we might have to play 4-4-2 alot this season.

Dont agree, we shouldnt worry about the opposition. Our players play best at 4-5-1 and we should always play that where possible especially when Cahill is fit

Well now you are really starting to show your lack of knowledge. So genius we play 451 regardless of the situation? All premiership clubs, sorry all professional football sides pick a team and formation based on what they feel will win the game. There are two sides out there, its not kicking the ball against a brick wall.

Cahill hasn't played a full season for years, we'll play 4-4-2 alot this season.

The best teams are adaptable and can mix and match there tactics to get the better of other teams. That's all I'm saying.

What happens if we buy two excellent centre midfielders and a striker who can score 20 goals a season? Is Cahill still a must, no he's not.

Yeh and 4-5-1 is what we win most games playing with. Its not that hard to understand

Cahill is a must regardless of who we buy, there isnt many players out there who do what he does as good.
Were not going to buy 2 mid and a striker anyway

Yeah but its like when Duncan Ferguson jumped for the 200th time in a season, the defenders just let him and they picked up the knockdown.

Too predictable, surely the team plays best in a formation that wins games and defeats the opposition. If your constantly playing the same tactic, then its serving it on a plate to the other side.

No it was were we played the ball to Duncan which was the problem. We hit it from the half way line up to him making it hard for him to do anything. Similar to Yaks goals yesterday, play it from the right area and no defender would have had a chance with duncan.
Cahill has been here 3 yrs, i still dont see any opposition stopping him, do you?

Why would you buy a defensive midfielder who shits out of tackles? Seems very stupid to me and I doubt Moyes would do this.

He gave us shape in a 4-5-1 yes where he could play such a limited role but in a 4-4-2 he was woeful. He's get overrun alot a wouldn't contribute when we had the ball. We where more or less playing with 10 men when he played in a 4-4-2.

He was a decent player yes who did a job in a very limited role. Is he replacable? Ofcourse he is, it's up to Moyes to get the right man in though.

There's alot of players who call themselves 'back 4 protecters' but are [Poor language removed] horrific in the tackle.

Carsley would do his job quietly and effectively.

Does he complete full seasons? no he doesn't.

That's why you scout players Cal. You watch them, see if they have the right attributes to fill the role and sign them.

Moyes wouldn't buy a deep lying play maker and tell him to protect the back four, it wouldn't happen.

Alot of players can go about there job quietly and effectively but they can also use the ball well and support there back four when we have the ball.

Where are these players then?
