Possession heavy football will never work at Everton

18 months expansive football played the Everton Way; followed by 18 months of spluttering form as the players he inherited hit their natural limit for their abilities and they folded like a pack of cards under crowd pressure.

Not sure Snivelley or Aiden McGeady came from our Academy tbh

We're not Man City, Barcelona, Ajax, PSG or whatever top domestic club you want to name. And because of that we will never succeed playing possession heavy football. We will never have the best players, nor the depth needed to succeed in playing that way.

We can however succeed playing progressive pressing and counter attacking football. Such as the Red Bull teams do. We could also do well playing in the style of the Klopp's teams, which is why is killed me when the other lot signed him.

Thoughts? I know this has been mentioned on other threads, but I'd like to make this one solely about the style of football we need to play to succeed.

LOL

We don't currently have the players to effectively play a posession based game.

But to say a posession based game will never work here is nonsense. If we get better players, who have more composure and technical ability on the ball, and can play at a high tempo, then of course it could work.

I see what you're trying to say here, I think more than this Idon't know if our fans will accept this. I feel like we tend to appreciate a crunchy tackle, an aggressive high running performer or more fighting play - which is why we think Big Dunc for instance is a legend! I love him but he didn't exactly score that much did he? Anyway, I think that possession heavy football has only been really successful for a few short years at a few clubs, but a flexible style is most appropriate at themoment, where we try to be good on possession against weaker opposition, but try to be ready with counter attacking, dynamic play against Man City, Liverpool, Arsenal etc

I agree - progressive pressing and counter attacking may be realistic now, and then you build up over 2 - 3 years with the right kind of players for a new system

Possession based football isnt the problem.

The problem is creating chances, working the ball properly, attacking with pace.

The players arent being trained effectively.
What you say there covers more or less everything.

Marco Silva was very lucky to get the Everton job given what happened in his previous jobs. He is a young coach and it was a brave move giving him the job but unfortunately apart from a spell at the end of last season which gave us all hope there has been little to make us believe he is the second coming of Kendall.

I don't believe he is under huge pressure just yet but I do think that one or two more poor league results could see us drop into the relegation zone and then the pressure would be cranked up very quickly.

He has been unlucky with injuries but I think his team selection and the way the team has been playing has been very poor.
We beat Sheff Wed. midweek but I think that team would have been far more capable of winning last Saturday than the team he put out.

In this system I see the forwards essentially sitting on the defenders shoulder without any movement or runs. Doesn't make a lot of sense to be sitting and waiting for a pass to the feet without moving.

But as long as they receive the ball and play it backwards its all good bro! Cause we're gonna win the possession battle! High five!

Honestly I'm just venting because the US national team is trying to do the exact same thing with similar results. I've always hated tiki-taca, as I find few things in sport more boring than sideways passing, and now the two teams I love have both elected to use this soul crushingly boring system.

And its really starting to effect my enjoyment and consumption of the sport. Why must we be so boring and toothless?

It's funny cuz this gets called "tiki-taka" but realistically it's only 1% of what tiki-taka as a style is about.

Yep.

Tiki-taka is about moving the ball, not keeping it for keeping sake.

Tiki-taka or Tiqui-taca ([ˈtikiˈtaka]) is a Spanish style of play in football characterised by short passing and movement, working the ball through various channels, and maintaining possession. The style is primarily associated with La Liga club Barcelona, especially during the era of manager Pep Guardiola; however, Guardiola distanced himself from the style stating his view that "I loathe all that passing for the sake of it"

As well as very high pressing - at time the CB's play as attacking mids because of how stuffed with your own players you make the field. To go with huge pressing to get the ball back ASAP and creating space by making a triangle at any position so you can advance easier.

But whatevs.

You can play whatever style of football you want, but if your attacking players stand stationary in and around the box and your defenders switch off during set pieces/counter attacks, you’re gonna have a bad time.

Yeah agreed, it's a legacy of that. We were taught to be 'plucky little Everton' by Moyes, tempering expectations to save his own neck, and that legacy continues.

It's precisely why I was disgusted by Moyes late into his tenure here, because it was clear as day what he was doing and the harm it was doing. When we went ahead against City and he immediately battened down the hatches to try and survive, because we'd stuck our heads above the parapets - just one example.

Threads like this are the legacy. It's basically saying "Everton should stop trying - we'll never win anything again so stop trying to be a top team."

More like 18 months of Moyes’ players then once he assembled his own squad of players and style and they were found out. Every manager since Moyes has had a honeymoon period then it’s all gone wrong.
They’ve all had money Moyes could only dream about and still can’t even last more than a few seasons. Moyes stayed here too long but he doesn’t the credit he deserves.
