Points earned after the 80th minute this season

I think under the entirety of Moyes's tenure, we had more than our fair share of late shows. However, it just feels different under Bobby...like a positive thing, rather than trying to stop something negative, if that makes any sense

It's a 14-point swing so far. That's a huge difference.

Of course, it's also only part of the story. You could also argue that Moyes had the points sewn up before the 80th minute, so he was able to see the game out - whereas Martinez has been pushed to the end of the match more often to find a result.

As evidenced by the 9 points we dropped last season in the last 10 minutes, Moyes' way doesn't always work. And one thing you can say for certain: Martinez's more positive way of closing out games on the attack has definitely been more effective so far.

Not really, Martinez team is simply better than any of Moyes's teams.

We've got more points this season than Moyes ever did after this many games. All statistics should be more positive cos it's simply a better team playing better. (Which is partly because Martinez got to inherit a very good team put together by a decent manager where as Moyes got Walter Smith's old home for retired footballer and crap full backs, like and partly because Martinez is just doing very well.)

Should United away not be +2 as we turned a draw into a win?

Villa last year should be + 1 too as we turned a loss to a draw. But the overall point is clear even with it being a point out here and there.

Good points both. I didn't have time for proofing all that, so thanks. Here's a revised version:

2012/2013:

Points won in last 10:
+1 (Wigan A)
+3 (Tottenham H)
+1 (Villa H)

Total: 5 points gained

Points lost in last 10:
-2 (Fulham A)
-2 (Norwich H)
-3 (Norwich A)
-2 (Spurs A)

Total: 9 points lost

Net: 4 points lost in the last 10 minutes.

2013/2014:

Points won in last 10:
+3 (West Ham A)
+2 (United A)
+2 (Swansea A)
+1 (Stoke A)
+2 (Villa H)

Total: 10 points gained (not including Arsenal as they scored in 80th and we scored in the 84th)

0 points lost in the last 10 (not including Goodison derby as it was 2-2 going into 80th minute).

Net: 10 points gained in the last ten minutes.

14 point swing under Martinez.

But it's more subtle than "we're simply better." We're actually only four points better. The last ten minutes stats are massively disproportionate in comparison.

***Shoddy stats alert... see below for a more accurate breakdown.***

I had a bit of time on my hands, so I've been through this and last season's results to find the last 10 minute action.

2012/2013:

Points won in last 10:
+1 (Wigan A)
+3 (Tottenham H)
+2 (Villa H)

Total: 6 points gained

Points lost in last 10:
-2 (Fulham A)
-2 (Norwich H)
-3 (Norwich A)
-2 (Spurs A)

Total: 9 points lost

Net: 3 points lost in the last 10 minutes.

2013/2014:

Points won in last 10:
+3 (West Ham A)
+3 (United A)
+2 (Swansea A)
+1 (Stoke A)
+2 (Villa H)

Total: 11 points gained (not including Arsenal as they scored in 80th and we scored in the 84th)

0 points lost in the last 10 (not including Goodison derby as it was 2-2 going into 80th minute).

Net: 11 points gained in the last ten minutes.

Proof that clinging on to what you've got doesn't work!

We drew 3-3 from memory. So we were heading toward a loss (0 points) and got a draw (1 point)...net gain 1 point

Cool stat. I wonder if it's not down to our possession game, and the fact it probably tires the opposition out a bit, thus making the latter stages of the game fertile territory for us?

I was thinking this. Taking very few risks, especially in the first half, so few killer balls unless they're definitely on, and once we've tired them out, we bring a Deulofeu, McGeady, or even a hard working Naismith on and Bob obviously trusts the quality of the squad to shine through in 20 minutes.

If Moyes adapted Roberto's up and at em style he'd play eleven donkeys for 70 minutes and bring on 3 greyhounds for the last 20 to snatch some points.

Good breakdown. Agreed 100%. Possession & squad use is the way to win games, neither of which were things Moyes believed in.
