Let me get this straight. Some people are advocating that footballers, ie human beings with very little education, should be giving political and ideological opinions to the masses who worship them?

I really think they should stick to what they're good at and that's chasing a football around a field.

We should be turning to philosophers, psychoanalysts, anthropologist and sociologists for critical opinions. Never to men who can barely spell, nevermind analyse complex situations.
 

Not arsed about the polical opinions of footballers. However, i would love a less PR version of everton players to exist. You look at suposed leaders Baines and Jags. We hear nothing of note from them ever. Footballers are well trained in dealing woth the press from a young age. But i really crave Jags to speak up about something or anything that he cares about rather than just reading the PR teams script at everypoint.

Exactly mate - that's the main drive of this thread. Can Jagielka really be as dull and uninspiring as his weird moustache? His Twitter account is essentially one long advert. He just strikes me as a man killing time until retirement

Nah, It's more what @Boss_Blue was saying, give us an insight into your character, politics is one avenue but anything else would work. Build the rapport, get a greater level of engagement and support. Happens in the States / other sports

The notion that all footballers are stupid is utter rubbish. Why do you feel they have less intelligence than others? Is it because some are working class?

I think if you looked into it, footballers would have fewer qualifications than the average public.

I think that comes from the commitment from a young age to the profession. To make it, you have to commit an extraordinary amount of time from as early as primary school.

It's fair to suggest that they're not exactly well placed to be offering opinions anyone should take seriously on anything beyond what they do for a living.

There are plenty of footballers with interesting lives, and degrees, outside of football.

Are you saying all actors, dancers etc are thick before they were committed to a profession at a young age?

Does an average degree or a middle management job make you more intelligent?

I didn't say that; I said in comparison to an average cross section of society, the average footballer probably has fewer qualifications.

That's not saying they are "all thick".

On Thursday, Sunderland forward Duncan Watmore graduated from University with a first class degree - becoming only the second Premier League player in history to do so.

I think this is a great thread @orly.

I really don't understand this arguement of "they have money, they shouldn't get a say". It stinks of reverse snobbery, and where do you then draw the line? It's not like everyone on this forum is going to earn exactly the same amount of money. So should people that earn more/less than you not have an opinion because they may be coming at something from a different angle? Nonsense.

Furthermore I do think there is a disconnect between fans and players in general at the minute. Just thinking about Baines, Jagielka etc annoys me no end.

Funny you should mention this but I used to play footy many years ago with a lad who did the opposite.

He was on one of the Dundee clubs books as a teenager and had a choice to turn pro after he did his highers and jibbed it off, choosing Uni.

He said that the repetitive nature of the training was mind numbing, tedious and as such knew he wouldn't be able to handle the boredom,

I imagine this is to an even greater extent in other sports, I was a decent swimmer and trained to county standard, the training is ridiculously monotonous, the lads training at national level trained at least twice as much, takes a particular type of single mindedness to come through that
