In a similar vein to a recent thread - players who were signed and you thought would be ace, but then proven to be out for 1 last big payday at our expense. For starters

Ginola,
Gazza,
Ashley Williams
Did you seriously think Gazza and ginola were going to be any good
 

Gazza i still think was Walter looking after his mate and giving him something positive to do.
Past it players can sometimes work, Nigel Martyn and Rooney being two examples

You got to be joking there.
 
McGeady, Kone, Lennon, Alcaraz.
Lennon was an ok signing.
Kone was a pretty unlikely gamble, given the combination of age, previous record and fee.
McGeady and Alcaraz were clearly never going to be any good.

None therefore fit the definition given by the OP.

Drenthe and Van Der Meyde - they both fit the description.
