He's a weird fella speaks highly of us one minute then pretends he never played for us.Lineker
True, not dreadful not brilliant. Seem to remember him picking up niggly injuries which probably didn't help him.I didn't mind Naysmith actually, at least no more than all the other donkeys playing for us around that time.
Question is Groucho, did they leave us or did we get rid of them.? Mustafi requested a move for more playing time. His contract was up in 6 months and presumably he told us he had no intention of signing a new one. At the time he was 20 and presumably not in Moyes plans. We had Jags, Heitinga and Distin with Duffy as back up.On a similar, but sufficiently different, note to @Eggs thread (https://www.grandoldteam.com/forum/threads/so-few-games-but-such-an-impact.105276/), which players do you think, based on their subsequent careers should we have not sold when we did?
I put forward;
Marco Matterazzi (25 league apps) - good, if erratic, CB. Went on to win the WC.
Shkodran Mustafi (1 sub UEFA cup app) - another CB who went on to win the WC. Surprised Seargent Major Hoofball (@davek 2018 lol ) who always had an eye for a defender let him slip through so easily. Still only 26 with plenty of PL experience by the way.
Martin Keown (96 league apps) - yet another decent CB (and absolute oddball according to Neville Southall). Became one of the best league winning CB’s, and to be fair to him he only asked to leave because his wife couldn’t settle up here. He’d have been great with Dave Watson long term, who never really got another decent CB partner afterwards.
Anymore for anymore?
Eric Dier was only here on loan for one season from Sporting mate. we tried to sign him permanently but Sporting weren't having any.Erik dier,Beardsley still had 2 seasons more at the top level,Dacourt we should have had a few more years
He was only ever here on loan though. Having said that I'm not sure how hard we tried to sign him permanently.Without a shadow of a doubt Manuel Fernandes. Still quality all these years later and could have been a mainstay of the midfield
Anichebe*
Michael Ball is a sad one. Smith and Knox did the guy a huge disservice managing his injuries / fitness and we then flogged him off. Another what might of been with better management.
*not really.
Did we not get Mark Hughes round that time as well? Yet wouldn’t give Hutchinson the contract he wanted. Horrible timesHeres one, Don Hutchison, that was a big mistake from Everton, or rather Walter Smith
We should of done more to keep him, as in offered him a better contract at that time, well his final season he was a good player for us and wanted to stay, still had a lot of football in him and Sunderland made a big profit when they sold him on later. We sold him and the same week got Niclas Alexandersson, Nyarko and Gazza!!!
If we had Distin 5 years earlier he would have been a club legend.Distin.
We sold him and kept Martinez.......should have been the other way round.
