My dads wife is friends with Roger Waters, she was in some sort of Steiner school with his daughter. Anyway, he said they could use his staffed villa on Santorini (I think, an island anyway) for a week. So they did and had an amazing time. Came home to a massive bill! They thought it was a freebie to a friend but no, it was basically a holiday rental to Rogerl!!
Obviously he's more of a capitalist then he'd want us believe.

Led Zeppelin, for pure musical ability individually and as a whole are the best to have done it.

I've not really listened to Pink Floyd other than singles but as best bands ever, Zeppelin are hard to beat.
Deep Purple were better musicians. Zeppelin were brilliant though, and definitely made the better albums to listen too. 70s Black Sabbath rivalled Zeppelin in terms of albums.

LZ aren't even as good as Cream, who came before them...

And Page & Plant are the biggest rip-off merchants the modern industry has seen...
Cream were great live, but not much of a studio band imo.Zeppelin were both, although they did blatantly rip people off.

Greatest band there ever was?

I'd argue that these British and one Irish band have been as or more influential, at least in America, than Floyd:

Beatles
Stones
Bowie
U2
Radiohead
Led Zeppelin

... there's debatably a few more that could/should be on this list, but at some point you have to settle on something reasonable to demonstrate what is "best," and album sales and influence/reputation among musicians are pretty important.

So, yes Floyd is pretty great, but if they're "better" than even two on the list above, they're probably miles behind the others.
Black Sabbath must be in that list. Hugely influential , and as original as they come. You can’t compare them to Floyd, because it’s apples and oranges.

When they were doing 8 hour stints in Hamburg and knobbing everything they could? SIilar to Take That?

Wise up, mate, and try to understand not only the world-wide impact they had, but their composing and playing ability.

You are taking the piss if you mention Take That in the same breath as The Beatles.

In turn, not sure if you are serious, but if you are... Beggers belief!

You still going on about the Beatles playing ability ? Lol deary me.

Great songwriters, average musicians.

wow.

that opening instrumental is likely in the top 5 of most Floyd fans' favourite moments.

those epic 4 notes...and that lush synth-strings chord in the background...

...opinions, ay?

Indeed. Has to go down as one of the worst shouts ever in the history of this forum.

Money, it's a crime. Share it fairly. But don't take a slice of Roger's pie.

Not much of a studio band?

Go listen to 'Badge', 'White Room', 'Sunshine of your love', 'Strange brew' and 'Cat's squirrel' 'Sitting on top of the world' (although the original by the Mississippi Sheiks is the best) for starters...

I’m familiar with those songs. What I should have said was, that although they have good songs, their studio albums don’t hold my attention like led zep do. Cream were at their best on stage. On a personal note, I find their albums a tad dull at times.

Oh dear! Sensible discussion obviously at an end with the above.

Have you somehow managed to live in such an echo chamber your entire life that you’ve convinced yourself that my view that they were average musicians is somehow an “out of the box” viewpoint ? Because it’s not, it’s a widely held one.

Only people I’ve ever known to consider the Beatles to be amazing musicians are the type of people who play in dad rock cover bands and have only ever listened to guitar/rock music their entire life.

Every album has got at least a couple of songs I like but I've voted for animals. I love the live part of the ummagumma album.shame some of the studio part is so bad.

I do genuinely feel sorry for you for the above post.

You have managed to combine a lack of knowledge of the abilities of the band with a put-down of an individual in the last paragraph (about whom you know next-to-nothing).

Hope you feel smug and self-satisfied with yourself.

I agree, that along with some great stuff, they produced some turds (as did all bands). I can only take about half of 'Disraeli Gears' for example, and ditto for the Beatles 'White' album.
