I hate the 60’s, 70’s era of rock music for this exact reasonI’m not a jazz snob, infact I much prefer rock music generally speaking but rock fans (particularly the older ones) are some of the most dismissive people about when it comes to other genres, if it hasn’t got a piss stained crusty old man playing guitar then it’s not real music.... at least high level jazz musicians have the talent level to warrant being smug tw@s, I’ve lost count of the amount of rock fans who think peak musicianship is Rush.
On my bucket list is to see the flashing of the kingfisher splashing to the water........![]()
There's an odd(ly likeable) trend on Youtube that has black Americans with typical black-american music taste listen to legendary white rock bands for the first time.
I'm not normally one for reaction-video culture but there's something uplifting about seeing someone discover the Floyd for the first time, and of course the break-in album is the monumental Dark Side of the Moon. In the context of being black american it's especially nice to see the appreciation for something that's frowned upon by the that's cultural appropriation! commentariat: namely the black soul diva stylings of Clare Torry, the sheer funk of Money and the smooth slow-jam of Us & Them, plus of course the soulful use of sax.
Also notable is how quickly popular such videos become, many thousands sub the channel within mere weeks, and this results in some of the nicest, friendliest, informative comment threads below the video (something Youtube's not always known for). The first vid for example was uploaded when the fella had a mere 268 subs...4+ weeks later he has 47,000 subs. Deffo a trend!
Maaaate, what a great post!
Those vids too, the blokes reactions, beautiful! Made my day.
Have watched a few of these recently, but after the initial 'good for you' reactions of the Pink Floyd material the guy did some Queen tracks and tried to make out he'd never heard Bohemian Rhapsody and Somebody to love - yeah right

yeah, the thought crossed my mind they might be playing it up...who knows. if it spreads the good word of Floyd then i guess all is fine
moar live Mother!
Indeed - the strangest thing is thinking back to the first time you heard Floyd or any other band - that initial rush you get on discovering something special is unique and although the enjoyment remains indefinitely that first spark is sadly lost forever - I sensed that on a few of his earlier videos, but as his subscriptions rose it became more plastic with every video.
oh aye...what was your first Floyd spark?
I was quite late to be fair - when I started work in the summer of '89 the Venice concert was on TV one night - was talking to one of the older guys at work about it and he went out to his car and lent me Darkside an WYWH on cassette - went home that night played them they blew my mind - have been hooked ever since.
The funny thing is I also got my old fella into them the same time, obviously he's 20 odd years older than me, but he became a fan as well - Suppose we're forever indebted to that workmate of mine who sadly passed away a few years back - he's the musical version of an Everton uncle who took you to your first match.same two albums as me, except i was 5 years later lol got given them two as break-in CD's for the ghettoblaster i got on me 16th birthday. I guess you were born in '73, I was in '78...so i think makes us both discovering at the same age and with the same albums. I bet that's pretty common.
