It was easier in older times as you'd get players staying at Portugese or Dutch clubs for their entire career, plus so many of the south american players would stay there. From the 00s onwards the big clubs monopolise the world's best players and it's much harder.

Big clubs ruining football again

Tried to think of some players from the old Sampdoria or Parma teams, especially the likes of Mihajlovic and others from the former Yugoslavia, but many of them went on to play for a Milan or Inter or Juventus. George Weah would have been a good one, but Milan were so stacked, and Baresi or Maldini are so attractive as they were one club men.

Yeah. You think of a team like Brescia and then you realise that Baggio, Guardiola, Hagi and Balloteli all played for them.
