The ball was in the hands of our goalkeeper. How is that a goalscoring opportunity?

Ref needs to make a judgement at that precise time when the two players came together. Was Jagielka the last man? Yes. Was it in a central position? Yes. Did the incident occur relatively close to goal? Yes

In other words, if Jagz doesn't intervene and their lad takes possession of the ball then he is clean through on goal (ie. CGSO).

I was just using the high boot as an example that you can still be done even after getting 100% of the ball, as some lads seem to think that because a player gets the ball then it's not serious foul play.

This was that ref Peter Walton's interpretation of the tackle on BT, and the rule he stated:

Law 12: Fouls and Misconduct

SERIOUS FOUL PLAY

A tackle or challenge that endangers the safety of an opponent or uses excessive force or brutality must be sanctioned as serious foul play.

Any player who lunges at an opponent in challenging for the ball from the front, from the side or from behind using one or both legs, with excessive force or endangers the safety of an opponent is guilty of serious foul play.

Lunges with excessive force? Exactly he was standing still, there was no force behind the tackle. Going off that then every single slide tackle done at running pace is a foul. Even if they take the ball as their momentum can be classed as dangerous. Standing still has no force

Did he get the ball clear of the attacker? Yes!
Reckless play maybe, but goal scoring chance, absolutely not.
Saying that, I'm happy with the decision as it means he'll be back sooner.. hopefully not in the first 11 but at least pushing the others on.

Well he clearly made the wrong one. The ball was with Pickford. So your regaining posession test is failed.

Great pic of Jagielka:

Sums him up perfectly - a captain who cant even appeal his own sending off convincingly.

It was weird to see him so dejected and accepting of the red.
He must have known it wasn't red worthy but it just didn't seem like he wanted to make that point.
He's been fantastic for us, maybe just needs some spotlight taking off him / time against the teams without lightning pace.

Only an utter beanhead would not realise the fact that dispite his decrepitude and declining abilities, we would have almost certainly been relegated last season without him, in my opinion. Sure he's not as good as he was, but he still plugged a lot of leaks last year, caused by the absolute incompetence of Williams.

Perhaps you have also forgotten that man u and Chelsea were both sniffing around him in his prime. He stayed, thank goodness.

In his prime he was the best centre half we have had in the premier league era. And one of the best period.

His knee injury in 09 (and to Arteta and Yak :/ ) robbed us of an FA Cup.

He could have moved to any club at that stage of his career. He stayed and has been a fabulous player.

He has lost a yard both physically and mentally too, as happens to all great players eventually.

By the time his suspension is complete he will be 5th choice. Which is acceptable.

Hopefully Coleman gets the captaincy next week and keeps it.

Yep,everytime i see the defenders doing what they do like backtracking as in what Jags did,i always think they are going to fall over and be caught out and cost us a goal

When I played football just at college level you where always taught never to pass a ball across the box. A bobble or a slip and you have presented a goalscoring opportunity that is better than a penalty.

It was criminal considering Wolves had spent 45 minutes proving they couldn't create a single chance from open play.

I always try and look at it and think how I would have reacted if it had been on one of our players, I would have been screaming for a red. At the end of the day it's all about opinions though mate, some see it as a red, some don't, it's what makes debating footy boss.
