Bruce Wayne

Player Valuation: £100m
I'm no expert on the rules of the game, but on Match of the Day Alan Hanson was quite adament that Big Vic was fouling the goalkeeper by having one arm around him.

Can someone tell me therefore why we weren't given several penalties last weekend when Shawcross had both of his arms clamped around Fellaini?

I'm not one for screaming about ex-kopite bias, Bruce, but even I think Hansen was being a bit one-eyed on that one. Robbie Savage could hardly believe his ears, could he? Merson and Stelling were equally bemused by the decision yesterday.

Hansen chipped away a little more of his own credibility last night. Vic wasn't even holding the goalie, just had one arm around his torso. Don't remember Hansen being up in arms about Shawcross's constant feeling up of Fellaini last week.

Corners and free kicks near the area are a complete joke these days. The authorities need to clamp down on the grabbing, pulling and headlocks that go on. Then they need to apologise to the fans for letting things get so out of hand.

There was another shocker at City. Barry jumped all over the Reading bloke when he got their winner.
I'd forgotten how bad Carlton Cole's foul on Ivanovic was when he scored West Ham's 2nd against Chelsea until I saw it again last week.
Is there anyone out there qualified to tell us what the friggin' rule is FGS!

The referee's need to start getting a grip on this holding and giving penalties against the defender's doing it, then it might have an impact.

I cant remember a season were we have had so many disallowed goals.

Im not his biggest fan, but Howard gets blocked far more frequently and aggressively then Vic did on Jussi yesterday.

The Rules of an Elegant Graceful Full-Back......

If you can't get an arm around the player then just use a hand to control/deflect the ball away from him, unless he's a young 'un of course in which case you can just leave him be cos nobody EVER won anything with kids..... and besides that Lawro has probably got his eye on him.

What we should do is the next time one of our players is being manhandled by a defender, someone should go and do exactly the same to the opposition goalkeeper. See what the ref does.

exactly this. soon we'll have strikers asking for pockets in their shorts so they can stick their arms in there as not to be penalised. Keepers are stupidly over protected, but ref's give them everything if they come for a ball and not catch it. yes anichebe had his hand on him but he was not holding him or anything - not that it had anything to do with what would happen to the ball anyway. All this tugging and rubbish goes on in about 3/4 different incidents so it really should only apply to where the ball is - because the ref's can't look in 3/4 places at once. it's just something you have to live with now.

but yeah, people have to put their arms somehwere, if vic had to jump for that ball his arms would have been touching jaaskelainan because he was standing in an area where his arms would be. You just need to apply common sence - the ref was in a good enough position/better than the linesman to make his own judgement. the pen againt man city was right - it was just our luck that we were the ones penalised - but it is something that would clamp down on the issue. fair play to probert, shame nobody else is following suit - hope to see him giving a pen for every incident like that though, not just at the favourable etihad - we'll see

Great minds and all that.

Wasn't there a stat that 47 out of 48 fouls in the euros given inside the penalty area were to the defending team, something like that anyway.

Its always been the same, most of the time the defenders get away with stuff and fouls get given against attackers because it is simply easier, every now and again a penalty will get given but half the time there's an outcry "oh you can't give a penalty for that" type stuff.

Plus you have to take into account officials only give what they see or what stands out from everyone else, they cannot give or see everything.

Holding an opponent includes the act of preventing him from moving past or
around using the hands, the arms or the body.

I think Victor quite clearly had his arm across the chest of Jaskaleninin so by the rules of the game you want the refs to enforce it was a foul.

Sucks when it gets given against us when others aren't given in our favour of course but thats why it was rightfully if not harshly disallowed.

how the hell the lino saw that from where he was ? The normally dont see things 2 yards away

i've not got a problem with city's goal - the full back decided he was going to stand there and duck - Barry's got every right to go for that ball IMO
