Pace, tempo and pressing

We need to sit deeper and play much more direct away from home. Possession is nine tenths of the FLAW in out instance. We don't have the personel to control games AND create enough chances. It's usually one or other and regularly neither.

The loss of Joao Pedro Sousa was and is a big one to Silva personally and the whole squad.

It is no excuse but it seems like lots of factors are contributing.

Due to the trends in the market and later signings, they tend to need at least October/November before feeling half settled and we can't get the bounce in playing them from the off.

There is still an issue with pre-season games the majority of which are played against opponents who will not replicate in percentage terms the intensity we face once the season starts.

What disappointed me on Friday what that these factors should have been mitigated as there were no new signings in the line-up. But our biggest issue is a lack of leadership. Still. There are too many players throwing their hands in the air like Richarlison and even Sigurdsson was doing it on Friday. Coleman as captain didn't appear to take the initiative, not that he should be the fall guy for the whole team either. Sometimes I wonder despite his utterances whether he has just given up hope of winning anything here.

I've noticed we lack these three things so far this season(I know its only three games but watching MOTD last night it struck me how turgid we are compared to others right now). Is It new players bedding in (I hope it will get better when Iwobi/Kean start)or new players not starting? Is it the low intensity preseason? Is it fitness? The loss of Zouma and Gana? At the end of last season we had this tempo, the pressing, the fast transitions. Now we look ponderous and slow in possession always going sideways compared to the better team's in the league. Why?
I'd see the pressing as a major flaw in Silva's strategy.
He sees pressing as the way to exploit and gain advantage, his edge given all else is equal.
And the flaw, from what I can make out, is he's using the press, his press, as the starting point for his overall strategy.
There's a whole lot of reasons why this is problematic.
Even if he did get in all the types of players he wants to make it work, I still think don't think he addresses this flaw.

If you want to be challenging up the top of the table you have to start and build from what you do with the ball first.
And needs to continue to be at the core of everything. How you defend and indeed press stems from this.
Just reckon Silva has it arse ways.

If it was me, the starting point would be having three forwards who are good on the ball, dribblers, ball carriers, players comfortable taking on more than one player. I wouldn't be thinking, is he going to be able to press the two CBs and goalie?
You'd have wonder whether Silva is thinking DCL is a better option than Kean bc he able to play his pressing game better.

The starting point is how does the team get the ball the feet of Iwobi, Kean and Richarlison, and what dynamic mvt is needed to get them in the most effective attacking positions. It gets complex from there but can be simplified by looking at 1) what players you have and 2) preferred style
But the first two players I'd be looking at first are the CBs, what are there qualities.

Its not good enough to say, if we only had this type of player for that position. Rather you have to wait for the player to come from which you then say, yeah we can also do this now. Up until then work with what you've got...poor craftsmen blames their tools.

Pressing comes down the track, we've got things working with ball well now - now we can also do this.
There's no chicken or egg here. Most successful pressing strategies, which most successful teams have, works bc it compliments and is integrated into how they successfully play with the ball.

It's absolutely nothing new. We've always been a 'slow' team on and off the ball.

The pressing from the front at times last season was good to see, but it hardly ever happened. For me it's always been a question of fitness and simply not having the players motivated and/or disciplined enough to go 100% over an entire 90 minutes week in week out (which is entirely possible by the way - one glance over the road at the other lot proves that much).

Yep and you dont even need a world class manager to do it either- look at Biesla he has the team running through brick walls for him and whilst it might not always work - you never watch his teams and say "they were lacklustre today".

We've played the same way since Moyes, We don't create anything for our strikers, We put everything on the wide men and full backs, I'm blaming this absolute cancer formation that has plagued this club for years yet every manager we've had won't move from it.
Even Burnley play 442 for god sake.

Poor preseason. Fitness looks questionable. Richarlison hasn't rested enough.

He came down with mumps at the Copa America. That's a big deal for an adult. I'm sure that's had a knock-on effect on his fitness.

His attitude has also been poor, which is on him of course. The sulking is not a good look.

Our passing was too predictable on Friday allowing villa to regroup but allowing them to get their nose in front didn’t help, saying that We have to work out how to break teams down better when they park the bus.
The lack off movement is what annoys me they stay in a straight line and it’s to easy to get man marked. Funny thing is Walcott is the only one who try to make a run in every game he runs from the right in front of the opposition left back and behind the left cb but no one in the midfield tries it and when they do it’s over hit or to late. Now I’m not defending Walcott I think he can do so much better in the general game but I would like to know if the coaching team pick up on the lack of runs in behind the defence
