See Leeds are looking to expand to 56,500

The club's return to the Premier League was secured on Easter Monday, with the side hoping to increase the ground's capacity from 37,645 to about 56,500.

They were initially talking about increasing to 53,000 but think in a phased way, so it wasn't going to be 50K+ straight away.

Unlike Villa, I think Leeds are taking a bit of a risk looking to expand to such a large number before ensuring PL stability. They have shown in the past that their fanbase falls away when they go through a prolonged period of tougher times. Also think Leeds as a club charge their fans high prices so that will also have an impact if they are down in the Championship for a few seasons back to back.
Believe it when I see it.

Current capacity is 37,792

Leeds' plans to expand

"Last week, Leeds City Council’s Executive Board unanimously agreed the regeneration vision and Councillors will now be discussing the pre-application for the modernisation of Elland Road Stadium at a Plans Panel meeting on Thursday 8th May 2025, with the view to increase the capacity from 37,645 to up to 56,500. The estimated final capacity of the design in progress is approximately 53,000.

An evolution of what makes Elland Road great, the revitalisation of the West and North Stands, along with changes to the South Stand, will provide greatly improved general admission and hospitality facilities, to help meet the demand for tickets, with 26,000 supporters currently on the club’s season ticket waiting list.

Fans and members of the local community can visit a public exhibition at the Centenary Pavilion at Elland Road, which will be open from Thursday 22nd May 2025-Friday 23rd May 2025, or one of two consultation events as part of a community roadshow in Leeds:"

Is it me or does it look exactly like the old one.
No, it’s not you - for now it looks quite similar since there’s effectively only the pitch and the lower tiers with seats + the fact that it is exactly in the same position as the former Camp Nou. They took the internal frame of the stadium, reinforced that and built around it.

This is the projected final look

No offence, but it looks like a standard mega bowl.

From the land of Gaudi and Dali I would have expected more than just an upgrade from a bowl to a bigger bowl.

Was there no more adventurous designs considered? Was the budget limited?

Everyone has their own opinion, I am not offended. I can only speak for myself but I believe most cules feared a change from Camp Nou simply because, despite its age, it was a cathedral for football. Even when you walked in without anyone on the pitch, you felt the energy

Main reasons for renovations were structural improvements and improving gate revenues, hospitality services etc. Importantly, VIP sections to bolster the income

There were several designs, it began under Bartomeu who had chosen a project (Nikkei Sekkei architects) among several (Including one that wanted to move closer to the Marina, believe it or not)

Laporta upon re-election took the Nikkei Sekkei project and they refined it, the final result I believe will impress

It'll impress because of scale, I suppose.

A disappointment nonetheless IMO.

Then again, I've never been a big fan of our new stadium design. It's a hybrid of futuristic roof and (for me) unimaginative brick facade.

But its a better looking stadium than most because of the location.

Roof design + River Mersey + Liverpool skyline gets our new stadium over the line as far as the wow factor is concerned...again IMO.

No, it won’t change much in terms of size - a 5% increase in capacity. It’s the seamless integration within the neighborhood and club venues. I think the thing that was a minor irritant was how mediocre the concessions & food services were. Yes, the seating had gotten dated but still comfortable and always great sight lines to the pitch - yet that improved in terms of sight lines, leg room, seat comfort and digital displays

But I agree, Barcelona is synonymous with architecture - I think the final result will make a splash

Norman Foster could have given Barcelona more than this. It's like hiring a computer designer to make you an abacus.
