Old School Formation – The Classic 4-4-2

They're professionals aren't they? They should be able to adapt to 4-4-2. It's worth a try.
But they're also playing against professionals. A team of professionals playing a shape that is explicitly suited to their strengths and abilities will always have a distinct advantage against a team of professionals playing a system that is not suited to them, regardless of adaptability.

Quality post.

Sometimes I watch the game today and the tactics and think it so over complicated.

Get great players who want to win in a basic formation and smash the opposition all over the park.

I know the game has developed but there was nothing better than watching as a 10 year old as Gary Stevens over laped Trevor - he would cover back and the ball would fly in and Gray, Sharp, Heath would do anything to get it in the back of the net!
That's the kind of attitude that's made Harry Redknapp a very wealthy man. Constantly getting sacked and paid off for not understanding the modern tactical game.

What are the player instructions? Who's doing what and when are they doing it? Can you actually imagine anyone a year ago saying they'd have Davies and Sig as wingers in a 442?

Attack. Be more aggressive and get it forward quicker. Use the full width of the pitch. Get more players in the box. One striker attacks near post, the other far post. Defence keeps high line.

Be more fun to watch than the 3 number tens rubbish.
