I was there, aged 15. Bus(74D) from school straight into the city in my school uniform with my satchel. Special from Lime Street. Great game and great win. Then back to the station and train back to Lime Street. Because the football specials got low priority, got back home about 2-3 in the morning. My mum paid the taxi fare back home. I really was mad, even at that young age!

Pickering was one of the greatest attackers/centre forwards I have seen. Got injured a few weeks before the final, and I believe Catterick did not want to take a chance on him in the final, in the days before a substitute was introduced into the game.

….me too, on the front row of the Maine Road stand behind the goal. Can’t remember how we got there, I’d have been 9yo, seem to recall both my parents went.

The game at Maine Road was 0-0. I highlighted this: 'took another leg at Molyneux to beat them 2-0'. That was the game I was referring to. Apologies for any confusion...

The replay at Goodison - we fared worse than away - I can remember we were not the better side that day & lucky to hang on to a 0-0 - My late father went to the 3rd tie replay at Molyneux Wolves - midweek & Pickering & Temple scored the goals to send us through to the semi finals - City of then a division lower gave us a big scare - most ties were 3-0 on our way to Wembley in 1966 -

My late father also went to the semi final at Burden Park Bolton - when we beat United 1-0 - my uncle who is still with us at the age of 94 sadly now in a nursing home he only came home with one shoe on - as it was manic behind our goal or they were both rotten drunk after that game ....

My late father had a brother in London got him a ticket , but he was on shift work & my 16 year old brother by train went to the London family to go to the Final - he was in with all the Sheffield Wednesday fans with his Uncle & his two nephews - they were scattered all over Wembley an amazing day for him & me even watching it on the TV at home with my mum my dad came in from his shift at 3 -15 - pm ..... we were 1-0 down ...

Its ok we will still win he stated .....
