On the 8th of Sep in 1888, the first Football League matches were played. Over 10,000 fans headed to Anfield, then home to Everton, to see their team beat Accrington 2-1. In 1892 it was expanded to 28 teams and split in to a 16 team 1st division and a 12 team 2nd division
In 1884 the first match at Anfield in Liverpool was played between Everton and Earlestown (1884). Everton won 5–0
