The Colchester keeper, Graham Smith, was another product of Quarry Bank and played in the same school team as Joe Royle. I am proud to say I once scored a hat trick past him.

George Green's take on the derby at Goodison which attracted 78,299 - a 1-1 draw, courtesy of a late Jock Dodds penalty, on 18 September 1948. The "old timers" recalled by Cliff Britton included TG, Sagar, Bentham, Stevenson & Wally Boyes, who combined to produce the most fluent Everton performance of the season. Liverpool scored while TG was off the pitch receiving repairs.
