Do you mean there weren't many at the Stoke cup game? Away 3rd round in 84? That was when Kendall opened the changing room windows and said "that's your team talk" we had a good and noisy shout at that one. Sorry if misread your post.
I would say about 8,000 blues at Stoke that day. Proud to say i was one of them. 2-0
I've just looked back at the gates from around then and even though I went the games I can't believe how low they were, down to 13,000 for some Saturday games. But our away numbers were always good. We must have just got wore down and used to it, dark times for football and the country as a whole.
i remember some really poor gates, around 82-83, against the likes of Birmingham and Luton. 13 to 15,000. The Coventry game, freezing cold in the enclosure, 0-0, terrible football. But just around the corner........

Hi mate, for the record:

The Stoke City away game, 3rd round FA Cup on 7th January 1984 had an attendance of 16,462, but the following Saturday (14th) there was a 1st Division match at Stoke v Everton were the attendance was only 7,945.

The week before the Cup game (on the Monday 2nd Jan) we were away to Birmingham (att:10,004) and won 2-0. Interestingly Boxing Day 1983, we were home to Sunderland and only 18,683 attended, followed by Coventry at Goodison on New Years' Eve were the attendance was even lower at 13,659.

By way of comparison our highest attendance at Goodison in 83-84 was against Liverpool in March, 51,245.....
liverpool weren't getting full houses around that time, especially European games, pre heysel.
