1970 Big Joe leaps into action -

Didn't know where else to post this, but Lukaku's 50 goals in 100 games has brought renewed attention to Joe Royle's record of 50 goals in 88 games in 1969. I knew Joe was well rated but I didn't realize how highly rated he was (being a yank and relatively new Evertonian). Anyway, this prompted me to consider why Joe was never selected to the 1970 World Cup squad. You would have thought a player with a penchant for goals, not to mention a player who was part of a title winning team, would have been included. If you look at the forwards that were selected in 1970 (Hurst, Astle, Lee, Osgood, and Clarke), would you have picked Royle ahead of any of them?

First Everton player i disliked ,god he was rubbish didnt have the comedy value of Bernie Wright
but had about the same skill level and far less bottle
Absolutely spot on. In fairness to him iirc he had a decent record at Ipswich but he completely froze on the bigger stage with us. I think the transfer was more about Johnson going than him coming.
On a second point re Johnson I am pretty sure his last game in his second spell was when he was subbed off at Oxford in the league cup the famous kevin Brock back pass and Inchy's equaliser to give a slightly streaky replay from which we went from strength to strength in 1984. HK had persisted with him for too long and our attacking really looked up from that point imo.

My hero mate when He first came in to the team as a youngster and cemented his place struggled a bit - if this forum would have been in action in those days it would have been bad comments on him as he replaced the golden vision as a kid the old fans around me Jibbed me every week as I could see he had something and argued with them - He worked so hard - great in the air , and held the ball well upfront to link in the midfield a complete centre forward hence my avatar.
I did not look at his goal record he was just my hero took over duties of penalty taker off Bally who started to miss them after a great record - The Joe used to thump them high usually into the top corner under the bar!
An England international Like the Latch never played enough games for his country;)
