Nothing but the Best, is it Good Enough?
nsno-1024x461.jpg

Nil Satis Nisi Optimum, a motto that seems to be losing its meaning by the day...

Four Latin words that any Evertonian could translate.

For most, it’s as far as their affiliation with Latin goes. A phrase that means nothing to many but everything to anyone associated with the royal blue.

It’s what our club demands, it’s on show all around the stadium, on the club crest, programme, shirts...

Basically, it’s everywhere as a reminder to what Everton F.C. aspires to.

But the standards it demands are falling, drifting away on a breeze across a Mersey where a bright new future is allegedly waiting to be built.

Majority shareholder Farhad Moshiri came out with a statement in the past week, addressing his support for Ronald Koeman... I for one like that.

It’s what he also said that has bemused the fans.

The Iranian money man referred to the miserable home defeat against Burnley as the “only unexpected loss” of the season to date.

That’s grim reading for supporters of a club that’s meant to be full of ambition. It also appears to relegate NSNO to an obsolete term.

Implying games against Chelsea, Tottenham, and Manchester United, as well as mid table Italian side Atalanta, if that is what the statement is implying, were irrelevant.

Clashes that fans would’ve spent hundreds upon hundreds of pounds to attend... when the hierarchy at the club already ‘knew’ the outcome, apparently.

It goes back to the days of David ‘knife to a gunfight’ Moyes, days that Everton looked to leave behind due to the injection of Moshiri’s millions.

But words like this from the top create a loser’s mentality.

A mentality that can quickly work itself right to the heart of the players.
It may also be a strong reason why the Toffees have been deprived of silverware for what will be at the minimum 23 years.

Or even a vital component why no Everton side have won away at Chelsea since 1994, or at Arsenal in 21 years, no Anfield victory this millennium and a degrading nine and seven year wait for positive results away at Spurs or Manchester City.

Go in to a showdown thinking the worse and the job is already all but done. Defeatist attitude will be certain demise. Now thanks to Moshiri the players have an excuse. What an own goal.

Farhad is the man for the future.

And hopefully this is a blip in what has been a so far successful time in his pulling the strings at Goodison.

But it is a bizarre statement that increased dark clouds over what has already been an uninspiring start to the campaign.

And knowing first-hand the fickle-nature of Evertonians (sorry people, I’m guilty of it too, it’s true!) he will want to watch what he is saying.

Perhaps someone should sit Farhad down and remind him of what this great club stands for.

The people who now run the club may not yet have bought into it, but they need to understand as far as the fans are concerned nothing but the best is truly good enough at Everton…

Up the Toffees

Nail on head there mate.

It’s more to do with not saying things rather than saying them at the moment, from both Koeman and Moshiri.
A simple strategy is if you can’t say anything good, then don’t say anything at all.

Fake positivity can almost be as damaging as brutal honesty, the best plan at the moment is to keep heads up and mouths shut.

Up the Toffees

Good read that mate. Depressing like, but still a good read.

I think it's a bit pedantic to pick on someone's words when English isn't their first language. He might have meant surprising instead of unexpected but chose the wrong word.

Having said that I think Moshiri would be well advised to have someone from PR proof read his statements before airing them.

About the motto, it's just words.

If we changed it to "Nil Satis Nisi Septima" people would complain about that too. The motto is about what you aspire to be not what you always are.

You're right. I'm not bothered about what he said, but actions speaks louder than words, and what I've witnessed so far, scares the life out of me.

Nice article @Tom Ferguson ! My issue with the whole deal is this: He said it was our only "un"expected loss. He didn't say we expected to lose to the others at all. And if you ask most of our flag waving, shirt wearing, NSNO following supporters about this, THEY expected to lose most of those games. When I say THEY, I mean WE. Most of us did. We looked at those fixtures and though, "Crikey, that's tough".

We have polls on here, which will show how many of us thought we'd get such and such points. Apart from the obvious wums and the clearly deluded, how many thought we'd be sat here right now with 15/18 points? Not many I'd guess. So the use of the word is just that. It's a word. It has it's own meaning, that so many have decided to tear apart and mean the exact opposite of.

That's unfair.

What isn't unfair is the fact that we've seen, over the years, and depending on your age, a veritable pile of nothingness from us. The saying "Always the Bridesmaid" seems to have been tailor made for Everton. Yet it shouldn't be that way. One word from a Chairmans/Major shareholders mouth should not be so scrutinised. Their actions and everything else they say and do should be though. 100%. Lets not get wound up about a word. Lets get wound up about the inability to replace our one and only forward, lets get wound up about the fact that we've spent a bloody fortune on players, where we didn't need players. There's so much more to be addressed than some twitterheads interpretation of a statement.

It's just words, the reason we haven't won the title for 2 generations has nothing to do with Latin mottoes , it's because we haven't fielded a team good enough in that time.
Everything else is just ephemera and bluster.
Harsh but fair. I don't think the article is necessarily saying we expect league honours, but demonstrable quality, effort and passion.

Certainly Koeman hasn't exuded that all season. Moshiri is doing the right things for me: new stadium, supportive stance towards mgt etc.

The phrasing is poor here though re: 'unexpected losses' and it sounds like complacency. Combined with Rooney's off pitch antics, and general on field lethargy from our other summer 'stars', the tone here is fair.

I wish we'd stuck the 150m in the stadium and promoted youth and squad players with an internal candidate as manager. We'd all have a much greater sense of progress and be a step closer to a new stadium, too.

Do one Ron. Moshiri, give the job to Unsworth.
