Current Affairs NHS Cyber Attack

I'm sure there will be a few arses getting booted in board rooms around the world for not doing their job, and yes if there is other people high up the NHS who knew the danger and didn't flag it up should get booted too but all's they can do is refer it to the health secretary, my point is thoe, if he's the man who signs off these contracts to pay Microsoft to keep the software upto date, which it sounds like he is, then his job should be on the line also

Fairly sure he signs off on next to nothing in terms of operational procedure.

Of course, this isn't to say that IT in the NHS hasn't been a shambles for sometime now, and indeed, the organisation (NHS Digital) has yet to appoint a replacement for Andy Williams, who stepped down this spring, but this really isn't helped by misconceptions being spouted to score political points (from whatever side because both tribes are as bad as the other).

By the way, the following is a statement from the department responsible for this.

https://digital.nhs.uk/article/1493/UPDATED-Statement-on-reported-NHS-cyber-attack-13-May-

"
We are continuing to work around the clock to support NHS organisations that have reported any issue due to yesterday's cyber-attack.

We have received no reports of patient data being compromised.

We are not publishing a list of those we are assisting at this stage; given the situation is changing and impacting organisations in a range of different ways. For instance we are aware some bodies, which range from practices to trusts, may have suspended selected systems purely as a precautionary measure.

We are aware of widespread speculation about the use of Microsoft Windows XP by NHS organisations, who commission IT systems locally depending on population need.

While the vast majority are running contemporary systems, we can confirm that the number of devices within the NHS that reportedly use XP has fallen to 4.7 per cent, with this figure continuing to decrease.

This may be because some expensive hardware (such as MRI scanners) cannot be updated immediately, and in such instances organisations will take steps to mitigate any risk, such as by isolating the device from the main network.

Our focus remains on assisting organisations, working closely with the National Cyber Security Centre, the Department of Health, NHS England and NHS Improvement.

Notes to editors

NHS Digital delivers a range of data security services that support NHS organisations to take appropriate cyber security measures and help them to respond effectively and safely to cyber security threats. These include:

  • broadcasting information to NHS organisations about known cyber security threats and appropriate steps to take to minimise these risks, as was the case with this incident.
  • protective real time monitoring of national NHS IT services and systems, which have all been designed to have strong security measures.
  • undertaking free cyber security testing for NHS organisations and give them bespoke advice about appropriate steps they can take.
  • training for health and care staff designed to ensure frontline workers are aware of their own responsibility towards ensuring cyber security in their organisations, and that they know the simple steps that they can take to help to keep their organisation secure."

Well according to you we may as well get rid of Jeremy hunt because he doesn't do anything and we cant blame the Secretary of state for health for stuff going wrong in the NHS. Unbelievable you are defending him like this.

May as well get rid if all ministers then eh? Political points scoring? Come off it . This is about holding to account the minister responsible for his own department.

He'll represent the NHS in cabinet and provide the budget for the service, but the NHS is operationally run by Simon Stevens, with each trust run by their own CEO. They'll be the ones that decide how money is spent, with departments like NHS digital providing (as the name suggests) digital support throughout the NHS.

You're blaming Hunt because you don't know who else to blame.

Completely wrong. You're misunderstanding how Trust structures work here.

Possibly. But Hunt is in overall charge isn't he? He's the one who has overall say on NHS wide issues does he not? I understand each trust is different and run differently but the health Secretary is in overall charge of the department? A computer system would be up to the department as a whole and not individual trusts wouldn't It? Unless I am totally misunderstanding things.

Each trust doesn't control the IT does It?

No, definitely.

I don't mean to sound patronising but I suspect many don't know how it works, even those who work in it. Kafka didn't design health systems but if he did he'd design the NHS.
No it's ok mate don't worry about it. As I said wanted help understanding it. Really thought health Secretary had overall control of national issues such as computer systems and day to day running was left to each trust.

How could he? Politicians can fall overnight, that's why we have the DH, NHS England, NHS Improvement, CCGs, Health Boards etc etc

Of course I understand that but thought health Secretary gave direction on those national issues. But ok I'm wrong. Sorry.
