He's on the hot seat whether he signs an extension or not. The pressure from the fans and local media will be enormous. He's lost twice as many play off games as he's won and is going into year 8.

I think he's an incredibly good offensive coach but a terrible situational coach. Just look at the yearly chaos on special teams. I'm not sure he can win enough big games to win a championship.

Perhaps he just needs another cool & experienced head on the sidelines with him?

Yeah, that's an interesting one. Some mad record of having consecutive winning seasons though goes hand in hand with absolute misery in the play-offs over the past decade......next stop the broadcast booth....

It's not that interesting. If the goal is to win 10 games and maybe make the playoffs and get trounced every year in the first round, he's your guy.

If you're actually looking to win the thing, there's more evidence than not he's not your guy.

The way they've treated the QB and WR positions in the past 3 years is criminal. Let's get some has beens or never weres, to throw the football to a bunch of has beens and never weres...

Everyone is so concerned about losing the guy that they'll accept any results...

I can assure you this was a resignfired situation.

The Steelers don't fire coaches. This also allows for compensation to the team if any of these teams (like the Giants) want Tomlin to coach next season.

Effectively a mutual parting of ways

The situation has slowly come to this point over the last 5 years.

There is no way Steelers Nation was going to allow yet another year of Tomlin - it had boiled into a toxic situation.

Look, thank you for your service. You won a Super Bowl. You always kept us relevant. But there are a lot of weaknesses under the Tomlin regime and it was time for a change.

He will likely coach again if he wants to. Plenty of terrible teams need a stabilising player-friendly coach to come in and right the ship a bit - Tomlin will get his guys to play hard every game. He's perfect to take a team like the Jets, Giants, etc, etc to some modicum of respectability.

But he ain't getting a good team over the top
