I don't really understand why teams do those running plays through the middle straight into the defensive line for minimal gains. If you're gonna run, just head towards the sidelines surely? then just cut back inside if your blockers are doing their job..

There are designated ‘gaps’ between the defensive linemen they are targeting and the plays are constructed to try and exploit them. Outside runs can be risky because you’re much more likely to be stopped behind the line of scrimmage if the defence reads the play.

It was one of the softest roughing calls I've seen all season. He was totally right that it was a terrible call

I do accept that.. but I just feel like they're a complete waste of 1st & 2nd downs like 90% of the time. It's a pretty predictable play.

Big games are won up front. If you can keep running for 5 or 6 yards on first down then you can be really aggressive with your play calls.

Those sort of runs also mean you can run the play action and get the deep throw if the defence have committed to the run.
