Really ?

Fairly obvious - gives Taysom Hill that ridiculous contract, terrible cap issues - no wonder he’s done.

Let someone else deal with the mess.

Don't think Payton gave Hill that contract. But you're right in that he likely saw a team $70 million over the cap, knew a rebuild was coming and knew he didn't have the energy or desire to go through all that. Fair play to him, though, he and Brees helped turn my Saints from a laughing stock to a Super Bowl champion and perennial playoff contender, so in my eyes he's earned the right to do whatever the hell he wants. It really hurts losing those two within a year, but the real pain will come when GM Mickey Loomis has to deal with that cap overage. But it's imperative we keep the likes of Alvin Kamara, Cam Jordan, Demario Davis and at keast a couple of offensive linemen. Everyone else is expendable.

I think he needs a break. He seems genuinely happy at the prospect.

Also, I think Hill is cut without penalty because at any time in his contract now. It’s bad, but only like $10m/year. They have to figure out Lattimore and Thomas.

I wouldn't disagree that he seems genuinely happy unless of course Jerry Jones comes sniffing around and makes him an attractive offer.

Cap hell and a rebuild are not a good place to be.

Loomis has a ton on his plate, for sure. Especially with that salary cap problem.

Loomis has some sort of strategy with salary and bonuses. I don't really understand it, but a lot of cap space is front-loaded, then contracts are restructured (not for less real money though), and it changes the cap space. I read somewhere that by restructuring Lattimore, Thomas (or trading him), Ramczyk, and one other they can erase the entire cap issue. There's some sort of wizardry here so let's see what happens.

Fingers crossed, my friend.

Oh, Kamara and (obvs) Taysom too as well as others. The difficult decisions will be Cam Jordan and Can'tGuardMike.

Excellent read. Thanks. I'm feeling a bit more optimistic about next season now.
