I thought they tried but were told they could not copyright the original symbol of the city.

They copyrighted a disneyfied version which suggests there is a lot of leeway on Liver Bird representation as long as it does not look like their version.

Years ago when I worked in "That London", a colleague mentioned The Rutles were playing (at the South Bank I think). He was amazed that a Scouser hadn't heard of them - he was a bit older than me tbf. Anyway tickets were only about £10, one of the most surreal nights out at a "gig" I can remember.
