New European super league

And it appeals to fans in other continents (and thus TV companies)...

It would, for example, be interesting to know how many signed up members United or Liverpool have from places such as China or Malaysia, as opposed to Manchester or Liverpool.

Well tons more. Comparing a city to a country.

Thing is, an endless round of matches between RM and Juve, (perm any combo you like), with little jeopardy, (no relegation for protected clubs), will quickly become less of a draw for what is still an emerging TV market for football.

The selling point for the prem abroad is a long, in modern terms, history of delivering a competitive league, full stadiums, which sells very well around the world. The selling point for the CL is that its the pinnacle, The best clubs on the planet playing for Big Ears.

Other clubs can break into it, (Monaco, Spurs, Ajax), and bigger clubs can miss out via the jeopardy in their national league.

Remove the incentive for CL from the national leagues, they wilt. Remove the jeopardy of not being in a new one, it gets boring/dies.

That said, the money folk behind these annual suggestions wont get any of that.

Just to act as devil's advocate here, how about the NFL/NBA/MLB then? (Or even, at the other end of the financial scale, county cricket.)

I think, as a fan of an historic English club, it would be one of the worst things for my sport. (I severely doubt that I will see it in my lifetime though.)

However, as we know the owners don't care about such as us. I'm sure that some of the top club owners, especially the Yanks, have visions of a European league franchise where, eventually, Paris will be playing Barcelona to get into a World Championship playoff against one of the Chinese and US franchise champions, who will now be competitive because they have the money and every player wants to play for a 'top club'.

The problem with the NFL is that it has proved almost impossible to export. Soccerball, however, they see as ripe for a nepotistic takeover where they can control the sport and pull the drawbridge up after them. A good example of the kind of changes unregulated corporate capitalism brings can be seen in Formula One and the World Cup selection processes.

Thats a fair point. I would say the difference is we have ALWAYS had relegation in football. Neither do we have anything even remotely approaching the US college/draft system. We have had a football pyramid system that has served the leagues well for over 100 years.

And there is relegation in County cricket; they introduced it a few years ago to deliver some, well, jeopardy into their cosy arrangements.

It'll be the Top six they invite from England

Unless there happens to be an interloper in that group at the time they announce it is happening for real. Then it will be a top 5 and special invitation to x for being such an historic club.

The Premier League is a unique product and generates supporters and excitement. It will continue to be thus if sides go. Fair enough the league may shrink somewhat, but we would be perfectly positioned to be the biggest fish in it.

It would be more competitive if anything than it is now. Only problem is the European League advocates will be hoping that the TV money that the PL gets now will be moved across when the top clubs go. It would leave the PL as paupers and we would suffer as a result, I doubt too many markets abroad will want what is left of the product. Hopefully the PL would be dead against as they hold the cash at the moment, so why share.

I hope it goes ahead. I don't think they will be successful and I imagine most will be back with the begging bowl within a decade, where hopefully they are made to start again from the lowest tier and work upwards.
Mate if this looks like ever getting of the ground, I would hope the teams are left in no doubt that if it goes belly up they will not under any circumstances be let back into the league at any level which would mean they can no longer exist as a football club.

There should be a very hard stance, and they should be made to start again at the lowest level which they likely ought to be.

Respect what you're saying mate, but if theses team do leave for a Euro league they go with a massive 2 finger salute to the rest of us, with a stuff you we don't care we just want more money and if it doesn't workout we'll return and be back at the top table in a few years time. How many of us would welcome back the misses once she's hocked herself around Europe for several years and then decides to return because it "Didn't workout ". Sorry not for me if they want to go fine but there's no way back.

I said in an earlier post that I can't see it happening, the CL is virtually a closed shop, they may expand that slightly, but for English teams are they going to be happy being on level terms cash wise with the European elite? At the minute the Sky revenue allows well paid contracts and the ability to pay large fees,a Euro league would then split the money evenly between that group of teams taking away the advantage,if the Fas of this group deny them cup entry and refuse to pick their players for internationals, then add in the travelling, the 3am kick offs for international viewing, plus the prospect of only 1 team winning a trophy and it would die a death in a matter of years, fans of these clubs support them for the glory not to make up the numbers
