To be fair, the survey has all been above board and everything the fans said was reflected in crest 1.

It just proves that the majority of Evertonians are a very conservative lot. There's a reason the badge has looked the same for most of the past 75 years.

And I like crest 1 anyway.
Rubbish. The survey was engineered from the start.

It was constructed to produce the results the club wanted, so that the club could make the badge the club wanted.

I think it's more mundane than that. The club want to keep strict control on a new logo for commercial purposes they dont appear to have been able to do with that the old badge. I dont know whether they ever patented the old one but I know they've had running battles with vendors over other merchandise issues and it wouldn't surprise me if this was a move to rectify lack of legal clarity over ownership of the old 'brand'. As you say, all the 'modernising' malarkey for 'global brand consumption' was horse manure...as the u-turns on this 'new-new' badge demonstrate.

Totally agree Dave. You only have to see the way the club essentially bullies this website/forum over any FANS using images of the club crest.

Depends on what you mean by 'engineered'.

Were there any specific aspects of the questioning you didn't like?

As someone who completed it and also took part in a focus group, I never felt like I was being steered towards anything. Participating in the Focus Group in particular, it really opened my eyes to the wide-ranging views other Blues have. For instance, I was shocked how opposed some of the older fans were to having anything other than the classic EFC crest, or how much the older fans thought the name Everton had to be featured on the crest. Maybe it was just pot luck, given I was only in a group of 12. Or maybe it was reflective of the demographics making up other Blues supporters focus groups.

Yes all of them. I went on about this at length several times earlier in the thread.

Not least of which, the biggest hole in the questionnaire was that you could do it as many times as you liked. It was a joke of a questionnaire.

So what should the club have done then? Hypothetical situation - You're in charge of the club, it's June 2013. You've just changed to a new badge, it's done. It's widely disliked. 20000+ people have signed a petition against it.

You decided to consult the fans for another badge. What would you have done and how would you have done it?

I would have consulted them not led them.

I would not have set any pre-condidtions as to what had to be on the badge. If you want the badge to reflect what the fans want then don't tell them what they have to have, let them tell you.

I would have done a much better questionnaire - one that would not lead fans to the desired outcome for a start.

I would have ensured that no-one could answer it more than once as a bare minimum.

That's just to begin with.

Okay, fair enough. You're spot on about being able to fill in the questionnaire more than once.

Must admit though, I am struggling to see how we were led. I mean, they asked us what parts of the crest were most important - the wreaths, the tower, the motto, the name and the formation year. They asked us what shaped badge we preferred, round, shield, classic crest. I don't see how you can consult fans and not ask them this.

In terms of being led - yes, the voting is definitely being led. By having the manager, 2 club legends and arguably our best player at this precise moment all come out in support of the same badge (crest 1), that's certainly leading the voting. There's an argument that they're not leading, they're just giving their opinions and attracting publicity to the vote so fans join in. But it is hard to not see it as leading the voting when influential figures back the one crest. Personally, I think it's the best of the three, so the leading of the vote (if it is that) doesn't bother me.

I can live with badge 1 but badge 2 really is a pi$stake, it's laughably bad. The agency must've had their best creative team working day & night for weeks to come up with that. I didn't think I would be, but I'm really disappointed in this. I was expecting a real step change in our crest, with a selection of varied and contemporary designs (much like the way crystal palace did it). I'm loving everything Everton at the moment, Roberto, Ross the boss, Lukaku etc... but the new crest could have been done so much better.

No they didn't. They asked us to rank them in order which is very different from asking us how important something is and are now attributing a false importance based on this.

For me the name and 1878 are utterly unimportant yet I was forced to give them an importance which they just don't have. The questionnaire was chronic and the meaningless results are being misinterpreted.

This is what they obviously should have done instead of backing themselves into a corner with a ridiculous time frame like they have done here - the three pretty basic designs offered are proof of that.

It should have been the following:

"We've listened to overwhelming feedback from you, the fans, and next season we will revert to our former badge.

We still believe that a modernisation will be required in the future, and we will look to introduce a new, media friendly crest in time for the 2015/16 season. However, we will undertake a proper, considered and transparent consultation process to come up with a crest that the Everton fanbase can be proud of."
