Needing to improve in the final third

That's my point. He looked quality when he first came into the team. Last season however was a big step back for him, performance-wise...

Thankfully as it turned out, it seems to have been a case of taking one step back to take about 15 forwards!

For me it was a case of this: (I'm not an insider, but I think this is what happened)

Often Ross would try a little trick or two. For me, Moyes drilled it into him not to take chances anywhere on the field. This knocked his confident and stopped him playing. In other words Moyes knocked his confidence so severely Ross questioned himself. Martinez has belief in him. You see it in his press conferences. It will have done the boys moral a world of good.

If you click the link below you'll see what Sheffield Wednesday fans thought of him last year

General consensus was that he had loads of quality but they didn't know what to do with him. Neither a central midfielder, a winger or a striker.

Sorry for the patronising link!

Creating more chances is definitely the next step.

The space is already being made by Barkley's knack for committing groups of opposition players at once. He just needs to carry on improving his decision making in dangerous areas.

I agree completely, but that's become far more obvious this season, when we've seen what he can do when full of confidence. Last season he didn't look 30% of the player he does this term.

So last season was the first time you saw him play?

I was very hopefully when I first saw him. Last season dimmed that expectation (with the exception of the last couple of games). This season he's exploded.

the few times i watched him play last season, he looked like he had the weight of the world on his shoulders and was terrified to make a mistake. that wasnt the real ross barkley.

He only had 2 starts and 5 sub appearances. Totally unfair on him. Moyes put the fear of god up him because he wasn't allowed any mistakes yet players around him were making mistakes all the time yet were moyes favourites.
If Moyes let him express himself without fear of being dropped then Barkley would of had a good half season at least.

I don't think he's a player who you could Man mark out of the game either. ( which clubs will try and do) he's got some much in his locker that he'll adapt to any situation. He really is the talent of English football.

It's been a problem for a lot longer than this season to be fair. We drew something ridiculous I think like about 16 games last season, and a GOOD number of those were games we should have won comfortably on the balance of play.

But totally agree with the transition statement.

A lot of the time under Moyes we either didn't get going until the second half or we got the game won early and then just saw it out. Maybe because it was pretty much the same starting XI each week they were conserving energy and doing just enough? I think that the competition for places under Martinez and the desire to see how good we can really be has meant that we've pushed ourselves to perform at a higher level.

Yeah, I think more than a few managers will make the mistake of trying to have him man marked. We got a glimpse of how ineffective it'd be when he embarrassed Flamini and Arteta with a single turn on Sunday.

What he'll need to watch out for are opposition players taking turns to foul him.

Totally agree, he's a big lad though so hopefully he'll shrug all that off.

I think RM is changing Everton's style of play gradually from back to front. The defense has been pretty solid from day one. At the start of the season we played mostly through the wings, but as the season has progressed the midfielders have gotten more and more involved. And as the game against Arsenal (and Palace...) showed, we have now no trouble keeping the ball and working our way to the final third. But the lack of key passes and pass combinations in the final third is the reason why we aren't able to create changes as much as we should. But as RM said he is now going to focus on this problem. Osman could be the answer...
