Quelle Surprise...

How long for... Shortage of GPs and Districts nurses, they cant cope with home care now, let alone mass influx of very frail many palliative care people into care homes, thrashing around gapping for air days on end, is terrible way die wherever venue.
I think it's 4 weeks until the end of March for each patient. Or until the £200m runs out...

I don't know how many are palliative care patients, and I don't know if they'd be better 'gapping for air for days on end' at home or in a care home but the purpose of hospitals is usually acute care, so it's probably not the best setting for that individual.

I suspect a bigger issue will be people inappropriately discharged into residential/care homes remaining there indefinitely.

The carers, in private employ, get paid per patient / client that they see and not for travelling, to and from each person they see.

How can that be right ????

An old boy, I used to visit when I was volunteering, had a Polish girl, that used to come every day and make him a meal, give him his meds, tidy up etc.

She covered the whole of South Liverpool, from Speke, to the City Centre and had to get the bus, from client to client and never got paid for the time she was travelling.

He working day, was something like 7am - 8pm, sometimes seven days a week and she was constantly covering for other staff for various reasons too.

For this she got slightly above minimum wage and the net result, was that everyday, she was playing catch up, as if one bus was late / got cancelled, her schedule for the rest of the day was buggered.

Her working day was just insane.

It genuinely would be much easier working in a supermarket or Maccies.
My old man had carers going to bathe and dress him towards the end of his life (he ended up quadriplegic after a fall). They were fantastic, but similar story. Not paid between visits. Were not paid for fuel / transport costs.

My folks got to know them, they were a real lifeline on a lot of levels. Deserve better for what they did / do.

Not wanting to decry the work professional carers do, but if you fall between the cracks, and are allowed to be a home carer (non medical), they value the help/care you give a loved one at £10.00 a day. Seven days a week as well.

Its an honour to be trusted by the system and a loved one to be a 24/7 lifeline, but it most certainly isnt valued.

There’s also the stigma, that “ anybody “ can become a carer, so it’s something that’s looked down up on.

There needs to be root and branch reforms, where people can enter caring, with a career pathway, proper qualifications and recognition of the work they do.

I did it for just under 2 years, mental heath side of thiing assisted living and outreach
I was looking for a way out of the rail.
Loved the job, and got offerd a contact with more hours than the people I was working along side to try and make the jump.
Sadly I just couldn't make it work, was going through a divorce.and the pay on offer even with sleep ins ect wouldn't stack up.
Out of every job I have ever done it was the most undervalued.
for the responsibility they have its shocking that they get so little.
