I tend to compare him, rightly or wrongly, to Ross. Ross gets properly critisized for his decision making, this guy doesnt have a decision to make, imo, its either fly in with two feet or nothing

Pros: tackling, technique, strength
Cons: position, awareness, overplaying

In his role he needs to keep it simple. He's not in the small fry leagues anymore, playing deep midfield in England requires you to be switched on at all times less you leave your back four exposed.

A puppy ... He won some great tackles. Covered the whole pitch and plays with agressive and heart. ... Let's sell him and bring in some half wit.

At the moment he's the halfwit chasing round and not keeping discipline, it's like watching an over excited Doberman pup. All arms an legs with little coordination and even less proper agressession.

It's one thing showing passion but another helping your team win a match. He's young and hopefully he'll learn but he's far from being ready for a first team position, look at the amount of times Barnslely broke on us and Stones and Jags had no cover int he first half.

Hes defo got strengths to his game but he makes me cringe when tackling, as soon as i see him leave the ground im thinking red card

Just the words i was trying to find Doug, 3/4 of a bottle of captain morgans prevented me from finding them. Good post

Would have him in ahead of Barry any day. Would probably even prefer him ahead of McCarthy. So what he has to tone the tackling down a bit. The difference it made in that game watching two midfielders pressing the ball, throwing tackles in, winning it back then driving forward or passing forward quickly off either foot. That allows you to get your wingers and striker into the game. Cannot be bothered to watch Barry and McCarthy chugging round midfield not putting a foot in anywhere, when they do get the ball slowing it right down just passing it back to the defender or to the full back, playing it round for 5 minutes in our own half before even thinking of going forward, and knowing that every team in the league knows that the only way we can go from midfield to attack is from Barry's left foot looking for Rom to come short. Predictable, boring, ineffective, turgid rubbish. Besic and Barkley every single time. A proper balanced midfield with bite and tenacity.

To be fair you can't man mark Messi, Bale & a few other superstar players out of matches and have zero positional sense, get a grip.
Positioning and man-marking are almost the opposite. When you are man marking you are following another player, usually one who floats across the pitch, your position is dictated by another player's movement. We don't need to have a player perform that role every game, we need someone who can sit and position themselves in anticipation of opposition attacking moves and make tackles and interceptions in midfield while knowing when to sit back and cover for the full backs. I like the lad but he wants to chase everything and he creates space behind him. He's good but he still has a lot to learn about the position as he's only been playing there for a couple of years.

He wasn't playing a decent match since March except for against Israel. Then he got injured (he looked tired in 2nd ET). Apart from this Roberto let him play the whole 120 mins. Nearly alone in a real DM position throughout the whole match as Clev and Ross's main tasks were the going forward part. Rusty first 20 mins but then it was good apart from the mistake before the 3rd goal. His improvement is obvious comparing to last season: gets rid of the ball much quicker, feels the rhytm of the game, passes forward. And his man marking (I call it harrassment) is very good, but You can't mark 3-4 players in the midfield at the same time. And as I recall he had 3 shots (not out of the stadium this time) which were blocked but from all 3 dangerous chances were created. He's definitely not lower league material, that was shown in the second half clearly. Just look back the highlights: he drove forward before the 1st or second goal created the opportunity with it and also gave a beautiful chipped ball to Del before the OG. But the main thing I love in him is how muck the opponents's fans hate him when he's on the pitch. :-)

Also my MOTM is Del. He looked selfish to me earlier but not yesterday. Yesterday he was fantastic.

Useless. In fact I might even go so far as to say I can trace many of our problems last year coming from when he got into the side. Admittedly things didn't improve once he was phased out but still.

Miles away from being anywhere premier league ready he failed to impose himself in any way on the might of Barnsley. No forward thinking to his game, rash and extremely poor positional awareness. Has to realise he's not in Hungary any more. McCarthy is light years ahead of this fella and always will be. Barkley is the player Besic wishes he could be but never will. Could learn a lot from Barry re. The positional side of the game.

A liability in front of the back 4 that we simply cannot afford.
