Let's see amazing this lad is when we are playing against one of the 14 teams in this league that will come to Goodison, sit in compact and look to frustrate us.

He had a good game because he brought energy and bite to the midfield. I'm not having that McCarthy can't do that. He's been doing that without recognition for 2 years now.
McCarthy gets plenty of recognition, in fact I think he's slightly over rated by a lot of our fans.

If so, why are people jumping up and down regarding the defensive aspect of Besic's performance on Wed.

I liked the way he distributed the ball don't get me wrong, but McCarthy is just as able if not more so defensively.

I think he has more aspects to his game than McCarthy. He can impact it more, better technically more creative, can get forward better, and has a better big game mentality.

Don't know why he gets knocked by blues almost not wanting him to be good to prove them wrong. The amount of slack some other players under performing every week get yet this lad apparently has to be Roy Keane every single week otherwise he's not ready for the first team.

It's unfair to task him with breaking down parking buses. That's not his primary role. His role is to sweep up any potential counter Attack when we lose the ball in vulnerable position against team that relies on quick breaks and he's very effective doing that so I don't see a problem there.

Having said that, his dribbling and flair will do no harm during our attacking approach. It will greatly enhance our option in the middle of the pitch.

To me McCarthy is better defensively. Also, since being let off the leash a little this season we have seen him contributing further up the pitch because of his agility and speed - Kone's hat-tick goal, Lukaku's against Stoke etc

I like Besic, I really do, and he's played a very good 120 minutes. He deserves to keep his place currently.

I just don't buy into this "he's the answer" balls. FA Cup replay last season away v West Ham against a team who sat in against us as the game progressed. He would break the play, gallop forward to the final third and, faced with 10 players in front of him, elected to give the ball to Barry or Barkley time and time again surrendering responsibility because - as rightly pointed out - he isn't that type of player.

When everyone is fit - Is there an argument for his inclusion in the open, frenetic games like Wednesday - absolutely, because his bravery means he will take on a subtle pass.

Against the teams who are sitting in, I don't see what he brings over McCarthy when JM will at least look to break the lines without the ball and try and move around the opposition.

@Saint Domingo is right, it's horses for courses, but he's still got it all to prove - and I certainly hope he does!

Mccarthy is probably better at the defensive side of the game though probably not as good at man marking, besic looks to be a much more well rounded player.

I would be happy to see Besic and McCarthy in the mid while dropping Barry.

The fact is at this point of time we have 3 solid options at defensive mid. That is miles ahead from where we were when we would see Neville or Heitinga trying to control that. Lord, its Country Miles ahead.
Can't drop Barry unless only for a rest, hes been one of our best players this season

pretty sure in the past you have slated his passing, proved you wrong there hasn't, you could just admit you were wrong and pleased a lad in a everton shirt playe well, instead of being worried about the status of your favourite players, they are all everton players

Dont agree.

Besic is far better in the tackle than McCarthy he is better offensively also and a better passer.

McCarthy is a very good presser, who will play neat and tidy whilst giving you energy.

What mccathy offers us cannot be underestimated at all. But besic is a better all round player.

They each have their own style of play and bring to the game their own individual skills, in the future they may well compliment each other. just one aspect I think Besic is a more hard as nails player.
