Muhamed Besic of Everton is closed down by Yaya Toure of Manchester City
Mo Besic believes a second victory over Manchester City in the space of eight days will prove Everton FC's top four credentials.

The midfielder was the game's stand out performer as the Blues gained a 2-1 League Cup first-leg over the Etihad outfit on Wednesday night.

Before Roberto Martinez's men face their crunch second leg on January 27, however, they have the small matter of a Premier League encounter against City next Wednesday.

“We play City in the league next week and there are three really important points to fight for because we want to get fourth place,” Besic said.

“I think it is important to go there and get a positive result to help us prepare for the second leg. There will be a great atmosphere and it will help us if we can get a good result next week.”

“I am really happy that we won the tie.

“City, as we all know, are a good team but we were really good as well.

“We played with a good defence and were always looking to hit them on the counter-attack and in the second-half we had good possession. We played a really good match.
“The gaffer told us before the game to see the first leg as just one game, and that we needed to win. So it was really important to win this first game.”

Besic picked up where he left off after a supersub display against Spurs on Sunday and helped nullify the threat of Yaya Toure.

But the modest midfielder insists there were top notch performances throughout the side last night - and that he was simply “doing his job”.

“I don’t know, I’ll have to watch it back,” he said when asked if it was his best ever Everton performance.

“I was just doing my job.

“I have played in semi-finals before, back in Hungary, but that is not such a good league so this was the biggest game in my club career".

He played like it was the biggest game of his career too. He was class all game but leaving Silva for dead like he did was unreal! Ive always liked him since he came to us and I think he fully deserves a run in the side. He grew in confidence last night and it showed. Plus he's a snide too. Always welcome in our midfield lol!

martinez finds some solid players. besic has skills. just needs to play.

stones, galloway, besic, barkley, del, rom = i mean that's quite a beastly youthful core if you ask me.

The Fab Four should become the famous five. Besic could even turn out to be the best of the lot. Against some of the league's to central midfielders he absolutely imposed himself on them and dominated the game. Few players can do that v Silva Toure and Fernandinho.

Unbelievable last night. Absolutely loved it when he went toe to toe with toure and knicked it off him. He's been superb since coming back in. Well in lad.
