For oldies..Besic is the nearest thing to Tony Kay I've ever seen in a blue shirt.

...interesting comparison, Steve, that is an accolade. Was Kay as 'busy'? I saw him as a kid but not sufficiently to analyse him. I actually played against him once (Tony Kay). It was a long time after his ban and I was a young man but he was one of those blokes who was tough as teak when you made contact with him.

i don't see the likeness myself. Dissimilar builds. Both are skilful and hard, but Kay played with a certain arrogance that gave him an air of sophistication about everything he did.

Besic reminds me more of Mick Buckley from the 70s and maybe also Billy Kenny.

I played with Tony a number of times after his ban, at the old Silcocks Sports Ground in Watts Lane, in Sunday morning mickey mouse friendlies, along with St John and a couple of other RS. He was a nice bloke, but as you say, a real hard man on the pitch. I think he was always a 'busy' player, but in those days the game was different(theres a cliche for you!) Besic has the same tough tackling qualities and range of passing by the look of it. @'m certain he will attract 'trouble' fairly often in his career, but thats not to take away from how he should develop as a player. Very shrewd investment by Martinez, he'll either secure a place at Everton or move on at a big profit.

Interesting...I can see Kays arrogance, which youre right to mention, in Besic and this may well become more pronounced as he gains experience. He is still sometimes prone to the silly pass or wild thoughtless back pass, but his thinking going forward is getting more confident and definitely Kay-like in my opinion.

....key for me is that this fella will improve. He will become more controlled and I'm sure we will see him even more accomplished in control of a football and expansive in his passing. Not sure we'll see goals in his armoury but I predict he will score more Everton goals than Hibbert.

He actually reminds of Yobo. Some extremely excellent defending interspersed with the occasional murderball or bad turnover. With a bit more experience he might someday be our POY. JUST LIKE YOBO.
