David Moyes has claimed he would have torn up Sir Alex Ferguson’s Old Trafford blueprint a lot sooner had he been told he had just nine months in the job at Manchester United,
writes Steve Bates in the Sunday People.
The Scot has spoken out following the heartache of his axing, insisting that he would have carried out sweeping changes far more quickly had he been told that his job was under threat.
Moyes lasted just nine months – despite signing a whopping six-year contract to take over from Ferguson.
And he claims that it wasn’t enough time for anybody to be successful.
The Real Sociedad boss said: “I still believe I was the right person for the job but if you don’t get the time it’s very difficult to work.
“Taking over from Sir Alex was never going to be easy. Looking back I think everyone is aware that it was a rebuilding job, a job that was going to take time. It could not be done immediately, and I signed a six-year contract, not a nine-month contract.
“If I’d signed a nine-month contract then I might have done things slightly differently. But I’d signed a six-year deal which meant we’d take things easy and not change things that Sir Alex had done for so many years.”
And Moyes hinted that
his successor Louis van Gaal is being afforded the time he wasn’t given.
“Louis van Gaal is a very experienced manager who has won a lot of trophies and deservedly will be given some room to breathe because of the successes over his career. I’ve got no problem with that,” he said.
Sociedad were third from bottom when Moyes took charge but he has steered them away from immediate danger and is aiming for a mid-table finish.
“It was a difficult decision to come here but I also think it was a risky one and a tough one because I could have taken other options and stayed,” he said.
“But I thought ‘go on, have a go at it,’ and I’ve got to say I’ve not been disappointed.
“It’s very nice here. Great temperature, and it’s been great to train in.
“The weather’s been fantastic, and makes a change from the howling gale back home all the time!”
Moyes has had to tackle strange kick-off times, eating late and trying to master communication. But locals have taken to his willingness to embrace the Basque culture.
“I think if you come abroad then you have to try to immerse yourself in the culture, and I think that would be a big thing for any players coming out.
“We eat late and lunch late, but I’ve got to say that we’ve enjoyed it. At the moment we’ve not put on too much weight, we’re doing okay, keeping the training going as well.
“I’ve been taking Spanish lessons and I’ve got to say I’m enjoying those. But we’ve been learning football words.
“So I’m trying to show that I’m learning, I want to show people that we’re making a real effort to get into the culture and learn the language, be able to communicate better with the players.”
