Moyes Watch @ Real Sociedad

I thought he'd really struggle too mate.

Bet he's well annoyed seeing some OK jobs in the prem show up. Always thought he'd end up at Newcastle.
I laughed when that happened. The sunstroke Moyes Clan out in Spain while a more suitable drizzly and windy north east beckoned wor Davie, Kenny and Moyes Snr.

In a relegation fight I think Moyes is as good as it gets. That's why people are looking now and thinking he wasn't so bad. He was very organised and could get XI Sunday League players playing with enough structure and discipline to survive the drop.

However when you want the tactical mastery to go to the next level? Moyes is too pragmatic, too dour, too myopic. He will never achieve at that level. This is why when we were flying, we were laughing at him and now we're sinking, we're looking on envious.

In reality, Moyes isn't a bad manager nor is he a great one. He's a manager with some excellent qualities and some massive flaws, who suits one end of the table brilliantly and the other end poorly. If we want to move up a level, we shouldn't look back, the only question is whether or not Martinez is actually the man to take us forward.

They played a derby versus Bilbao and Barcleona. Pretty much the rest were teams around them at the bottom.

Decent return, I suppose though. It surprises me in one way, because I thought he'd get buried early. But not in another way: he does give off an air of organisation and discipline and it tends to get (United aside) some quick results. Over a relatively short period of time though these players will tire of him quicker than players with a more stoical British outlook to the work ethic.

I cant see him still being there this time next season, for sure.
so what you're saying is all spaniards are lazy

We should have both. Moyes defense coach, Martinez attacking coach!

If he hangs around Spain for a few years we'll get a better look-see at how well he does at the top of the table. The top 4 of the prem is pretty much a closed shop. Besides us in 2004-05 the only sides that wasn't a big spender and made the C-league was Everton and Spurs and spurs aren't exactly minor players. If I'm not mistaken somewhere around a dozen sides in Spain have finished top 4 the past decade.

His ability to find cheap players off the scrap heap is better suited for success in Spain or Germany.

I think he is starting to realise this and work on it. He was surprisingly positive about his chances against Barcelona last week. Very unlike him. His time in Manchester has done him good. For years he has looked on at the "big" clubs in awe. Dazzled in the headlights of their achievements. Wary of their options on the field. After a few months at one of them he now realises that they are just as big a bunch of blerts as anywhere else. He seems more fired up to get into them and do them over rather than just try to limit the damage they may do to you.

He only had us in one relegation fight, two other seasons in the bottom half were not close, the rest were at the other end chasing or getting into Europe.

Saying he was only good at relegation fights is simply untrue.

That being said I wouldn't want him back.

Good job that's not what I said, then. I actually said in a relegation fight, he's as good as you'll find.

He's also very good at getting you to the best of the rest and staying there.

However he never pushed us onto the next level (i.e top four, winning things) and I firmly believe, until he changes his fundamental modus operandi, he will never be capable of doing so.

He won't ever bring you the glory years but he will deliver you year on year stability and, contrary to popular belief, get you playing some pretty nice football doing it, if the talents there.
