For argument's sake let's say that the board are trying to get our finances in order so that we don't continue to lose £5m per season. It looks like we were at break even on transfers before the Rodwell deal and that our wage bill will have come down a touch. It's disappointing if we only got £12m up front for Rodders. However, because of the speed that the deal went through it seems like Everton were asked to name their price, so I would expect it to be higher. And if negotiations had been going on for a while, why would we take him to Malaga with us? He was down the pecking order for us an has an ongoing injury concern, so we could afford to sacrifice him.
I don't agree that the squad is threadbare.

Moyes works with a small squad out of preference. If we had three or four injuries to key men we'd probably struggle but so would most sides and I don't think that we'd carry extra players to cover for it. As it stands Mucha, Duffy, Garbutt, Barkley, Gueye, McAleney and Vellios will most likely hardly feature, so he's working with a pool of 16 core players.
I'd imagine that he'll be trying to find someone with the dynamism of Drenthe to come in on loan and play on the wings. And he may want to bring a target man like Straq in to give us an option in case we're chasing games. In both cases, even if he had the money to spend I'm pretty sure that he'd rather take them on trial first. The last thing we would want is for him to get over-excited and to splurge on players like he did with Bily. Slowly, slowly catchy monkey.
In that ENTIRE squad we have Jagielka, Heitinga, Baines, Fellaini, Pienaar, Jelavic who are quality players = 6.
We then have an abundance of averageness and untried youth.
We've got a good core to build around. If we can get ourselves in to a position where we can add one quality player each season and bring somebody through the system we will have done very well.
Rodwell was an initial £15m rising to £18m depending on appearances, so the Echo is wrong again.
Rodwell was an initial £15m rising to £18m depending on appearances, so the Echo is wrong again. The banks aren't begging for money, as THT, LCAB and foxy have all said, I would guess we would have more than £6m to spend off the Rodwell sale, hopefully Anichebe will be gone soon as well, adding a further £5m to the pot.[/QUOTE]
