Okay, well it looks like I'm on my own in seeing precisely where VDM is coming from. Moyes clearly disliked the man, so much so, that he refused to play him from the bench, when it was clear that he could have offered us something. VDM was one of the few creative players at Everton, and arguably the best crosser of a ball at the club. We chased some matches in the last 10-15 minutes. VDM would have been a good option during those times.

I would say that regardless of Moyes' opinion of VDM, Moyes isn't bigger than the club. If VDM could have provided something useful to the team, then Moyes had a duty (a £65k a week duty) to use him.

Moyes isn't perfect, he does play favourites and he does hold grudges.

WHO THE HELL could possibly want to sign a player like Shandy Andy? Well, Sam Allardyce obviously but that's already been confirmed.....

i will do my best to destroy him if he ever shows his face again, i gave him my tuppence ha'penny in bergen from the mainstand which had bainsey looking over his shoulder..... so he deffo heard it.

VDM was the last in at training and the first to leave. At no point did he try harder to force himself into the managers plans. He didnt get a game because he didnt show he wanted or deserved one. Even in the reserve games i saw him play, he looked like he didnt care.
Now that is a man who now claims that Moyes tried to destroy him?
He Caused this himself with his attitude and lack of respect for the club who paid his wages. He wants to blame Moyes because he knows if the real truth comes out, no other club would touch him.

Well then what was the point of having him even on the bench?

The writing had been on the wall for VDM for pretty much 3 years. It seemed to get steadily worse for him. I'm sure at some point Moyes looked at sacking him, but probably found out that he would have had to pay up the lad's contract.

At the end of the day, none of us really know the full story. But it seems clear to me that Moyes and he just hated each other.

My view is that regardless of any of this [Poor language removed], if VDM was good enough to make the bench, he was good enough to get playing time from that bench. He didn't, even when we needed his influence.

You probably know more about it than me anyway, mate. You get to games, even reserve games. No doubt you speak to people all the time. But although I'm less in the loop than you, I also hear things too. My "sources (lol)" seem to think that during training, VDM was pretty much top of the class with dead balls (made Arteta look clumbsy). If that is the case, he should have been used at times. He wasn't, so Moyes clearly allowed his personal feelings to rule his head.

Or am I dead wrong?

In the summer of 2006, van der Meyde proved once again to be the centre of much speculation regarding his future, having failed to properly settle at Everton, making only 11 appearances in his first season thanks to a combination of injuries and rumours of alcoholism. He staunchly denied any such allegations and reaffirmed his commitment to Everton in June 2006, stating

"I want to stay, I am desperate to stay. I love it here. Everything suits my game. I'm happy in England and I want to show everyone that I can really play football. If I get the chance next season, I will do it."

[3]

Van der Meyde was admitted to hospital in the early hours of August 7, with breathing problems. It was claimed that his drink had been spiked whilst in a bar in Liverpool. He was fined by Everton for breach of discipline. To further add to a miserable week, his house was burgled during Everton's friendly with Athletic de Bilbao five days later. His Ferrari, Mini Cooper, and dog were amongst the items stolen. The cars and pet dog were since found, although the Ferrari had its windscreen smashed.[4] In March 2007, van der Meyde accused manager David Moyes of telling 'downright lies' in regard to his fitness. He apologised afterwards.

In July 2007, van der Meyde played a full 90 minutes in Coleraine, Northern Ireland. In arguably his most successful pre-season at the club, he went on to complete several friendly matches in an attempt to gain fitness ahead of the new Premier League campaign. However, van der Meyde further cast a doubt over his Everton future by failing to turn up for a scheduled training session. After a string of disciplinary problems, rumours (which proved to be inaccurate) grew that Moyes would opt to sell the player before the end of the transfer window.

On 18 August, 2007, van der Meyde was suspended following a 'breach of club discipline', because he had failed to appear at training, being fined two weeks' wages, a total of £50,000.[5][6] Following this, he did not make a first team appearance for over a year and was limited to just reserve team football.

DEAD WRONG

Dont know if Moyes was holding a grudge towards VDM and I really don't care either. If so, he probably deserved it. Find it very strange that all our players are full of praise for Moyes. Everyone except VDM, who signed a professional contract at Everton in 2006, but never bothered to behave like that.(n)

I dont think Moyes, would cut his nose of to spite his face holding a grudge, if AVDM behaved in a professional way i couldnt see Moyes not giving him an oppurtunity.

Its well known that Moyes and Dunc didnt see eye to eye, but i dont remember him ever holding it against Dunc and he even gave him the armband.

More than anything I think it all comes down to fitness, Van der Meyde has barely played for five seasons and has missed quite a few pre-seasons because of injury.

I think to compete in the Premier League you need to be at a certain level in terms of fitness and looking at Van der Meyde it's clear he wasn't at that level. He didn't even look like a footballer and for a winger especially mobility is a big thing.

Van der Meyde has had no luck here, not all of it is down to him being 'horrid with an awful attitude'. There are a number of reasons, reasons that we'll probably never know.

In terms of his relationship with David Moyes, who knows? I don't and I doubt anyone does, even those with the 'sauces'. I find it hard to comment on something I really don't know anything about.

What I would say is why did we keep him on our books for so long? I have a feeling Moyes thought one day it might click Van would turn into the player we all thought he'd be. Sadly, it never happened.

some interesting points in this thread. the whole vdm saga seems such a terrible waste of talent (& money). however, moyes is the man who chose to bring him to goodison & was unable to get very much out of him so it has to be marked down as one of moyes major failures as manager of everton. had vdm been doing his job on a regular basis we wouldn't have seen an unfit osman being played out of position for most of the season.

As a few have said, we want to see any player that pulls on the blue shirt doing well, but with Shandy Waste of talent, self destructive, indiscipline, are the things people will say - but his lasting legacy could have been the five minutes he played, providing an assist for Dan Gosling to knock the shyte out the cup:unsure:
