In all seriousness, it's just common sense for managers to go to games between rival teams if the opportunity is presenting itself, you don't need to be scouting players. It's just a case of keeping your ear the ground and being aware of the football teams you're eventually going to come up against are playing.

I rang up Wigan's Fan club office. First thing they said was "How did you get this number?"

Then they told me they had their supporters meetings in a phone booth and there was space still available.

I went to college in Wigan to do A-levels years back when they were still new to the prem and they used to give us free tickets to the games, weeks it didn't clash with Everton I used to go, so I do have a soft spot for them to a point. However, their local fans are made up largely, from what I got in college, of people who either prefer rugby or United fans who only adopted Wigan in recent years as they moved up the tables.

I have no great hatred for them, but I do have a few mates who support them, so them sort of jokes come naturally.

They do serve cracking pies at their matches though.

think Jasper Carrot used to do a similar bit about Birmingham City where he would shout to the fan next to him

thereby inferring that the fan closest to him was actually quite far away and therefore there was lots of empty seats

He had a few nice touches. I was trying to be clever with Aroune Kone's name. They shouldn't have signed him until January though, they only get going in March.
